Appendix: News and Feature Stories

INTRODUCTION

The importance of mass media in the fabric of modern society and the growing role of the media as a source of information make media studies an important component of the university curriculum.

This book is one of a series of Language of Mass Media course books and is designed to provide students with the material necessary for developing reading skills and the ability to adequately interpret the pragmatics of newspaper articles.

The textbook contains up-to-date authentic newspaper articles from British and American newspapers: The Times, The Financial Times, The Guardian,

The Observer, The International Herald Tribune, The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, as well as articles of the informational services of BBC News and CNN News over the period 2001 − 2009.

The selected texts appear in their original form and cover four topics: Terrorism, Wars and Conflicts, Crime and Punishment, Global Markets, which are studied by 4th year students of the English Faculty taking the Language of Mass Media Course.

The articles represent different genres: straight news stories with their basic and unvarnished lead-and-summary form (also known as “inverted pyramid”); feature stories which seek to take an in-depth look at issues behind a news story, to analyze and examine events from certain angle; and finally “featurized” news stories (or mixed/ hybrid stories) which combine traits from both information and analytical genres.

The stories differ in length, some reflect the stance of the paper, others, like op-eds, offer alternative viewpoints on the issues under consideration, sometimes offering a dissenting opinion, for example, the article “Toil and Trouble” by the well-known New York Times op-ed columnist Maureen Dowd (text 2.3).

Through the study of articles students develop an awareness of major international events, significant and complex political, economic processes, learn to critically think and evaluate dramatic changes that have taken place over the past decade around the globe.

They should also acquire insights regarding main principles and features of journalistic writing, which are vital to anyone who wishes to read and understand newspapers and magazines.

The textbook contains a scheme of analysis of newspaper articles which sets forth guidelines for analyzing the texts and helps students better understand the content, style and vocabulary of the text, the implications of its figurative language and communicative strategies. The scheme suggests some potential general dimensions and questions for use in evaluating and discussing the articles.

At the end of the book an appendix is included to provide brief information on major compositional and structural differences between news stories and feature stories, as well as the list of different types of feature stories.

The textbook “Language of Mass Media: Newspaper Articles for Analysis and Discussion” is intended for usage within the framework of the course “Language of Mass Media” for 4th year students of the English Faculty of MSLU. It can also be used by all those who are involved in studying the language of mass media and are interested in crucial issues of today’s world covered by the press.

The textbook is suitable for classroom use and for self-study.
