FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE
1.Of the many great English women, perhaps, most outstanding is Florence Nightingale. 2. She has gone down into history as a person who did very much to help the wounded soldiers during the Crimean War of 1853-56 between Britain and Russia. 3. Despite all official opposition Florence changed the whole system of hospital organization in the army. 4. Florence Nightingale came of a very rich and influential family. 5. They traveled a lot all throughout Europe, and Florence was born in Italy in the city of Florence, hence her name.6. She was highly educated in literature, are, music and languages.7. Florence was very attractive and everyone expected her to marry one of her aristocratic admires who came to her home. 8. Since early childhood the girl took care of the villagers who became ill, and nursed sick dogs, cats and horses. 9. She had a great wish to become a nurse. 10. She visited hospitals, read books on nursing. 11. Florence spent some weeks as a nurse in a hospital in Paris, then three weeks in a nursing school in Germany. 12. In those days nursing was done by women of the lowest moral class and Florence’s parents did everything to prevent her from becoming a nurse. 13. But in the long run (в конце концов) Florence achieved her aim and with her parents agreement founded a nursing school in London. 14. But in a year the Crimean War broke out the girl went to the main hospital of the British army to Scutari in Turkey. 15. The hospital was in an awful condition and Florence and other nurses had to work 24 hours. 16 They managed to turn the barracks into a real hospital. 17. In 1855 Florence was appointed Inspector of all hospitals in Crimea. 18. She had to take long journeys in snow, rain and cold and soon she became ill, but continued her work from her bed. 19. She left Crimea in 1856 after peace was declared. 20. Florence returned to England but she was an invalid and couldn’t leave her house. 21. But staying in bed she continued to write books on nursing and founded the Nightingale Training School for nurses at St. Thomas’s Hospital in London, which was the best in Great Britain. 22. Florence Nightingale was given the Order of Merit (орден «За заслуги»). 23. She died at the age of 90. 24. The foundation of the International Red Cross was a logical continuation of her outstanding activities.
