Alexandr Ivanov (1806-1858)

The 2^nd half of 19 century

The 1860 were the time of greatest development of landscapes (Шишкин, Саврасов, Васильев).

They showed simple poetic landscapes reflects Russian soul, mentality and culture.

In 1860s was the time of the coming year of critical realism. The progress of Russian writers, composers and artists reflected the social problems of the day.

The Передвижникs

14 students of St.Petersburg Academy of Arts left its without diploma and founded the artist guild. They protested against conventional and academic approaches in Art. They manifested the social periods in Art. They proclaimed Story and Purpose. In 1865 they organized the first exhibition at Nizny Novgorod. The success lead them to the future development. The society of travelling exhibition. (Крамской Маковский, Перов, Шишкин, Репин и т.д.).

Ivan Repin (1844-1930)

He is the greatest Russian realistic painter. He graduated the Academy of fine Arts with gold medal. In 1870 he began his famous canvas «Barge Haulers on the Volga». He spent 2 summers on Volga River. It was highly priced. He created a fantastic gallery the great person of his time (Римский-Корсаков, Толстой и т.д.).

In 1901 Repin received the State commission to paint the Ceremony meeting of the state consuls.

At the end of 19 century realistic school of paintings produced artists of various interest and talents.

Суриков (исторические сюжеты), Васнецов, Куинджи (landscapes)

Левитан was prominent masters of landscapes. Landscapes reflects Russian soul, mentality and culture.

Серов (1865-1911) he worked in different genres. He is one of the best portrait painters (нарисовал всю семью Юсуповых).

Врубель (1856-1910) was a painter, theatre designer, book illustrator. He was represent of symbolism and modern art.

Also Russian museum includes artworks by the members of the World of Art and the Union of Russian Artists.

«The World of Art» - Мир искусства

At the beginning of the XX century a new artistic movement was born in Russia. Their slogan was «Arts for Arts safe» (искусство ради искусства). It was antisocial with retrospective (назад в историю, переосмысление) choice of subjects. Deep interests in the national roots (корни) of Russian art. They worked in decorative art, applied art, costume, book graphics. Сергей Дягилев was a leading figure in this movement. He organized exhibitions and founded a journal World of Art.
