The cathedral is one of the first stone buildings in Novosibirsk. It’s named after Saint Alexander Nevsky who was a Russian Grand Duke and the great military leader. He is commonly known for leading Novgorodian soldiers during The Battle on the Ice where they fought against knights of Livonian Order in the 13 century.

The cathedral was set up by the order of Russian Emperor Alexander the Third in 1897. Two years later the cathedral was hallowed.

In 1937 The cathedral was confiscated from Church by government to place here institute of building engineering. Then the building was taken by The West-Siberian newsreel studio since 1957 up to 80s. During this period the cathedral’s interior was considerably changed, wall paintings were fully lost and the building itself became dilapidated.

In 1989 St Alexander Nevsky’s cathedral was given back to the Orthodox Church. The total restoration was set up immediately, so the building and the interior were completely restored. And in the 15 of May in 1991 The Cathedral was hallowed again by Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Alexey II.

The full restoration of wall paintings and iconostases was finished only in the middle of the first decade of 21 century.
