MY FAMILY
I am Alex Sidorov. Alex is my first name and Sidorov is my surname. I am seventeen years old. I want to tell you a few words about my family. My family is large. I've got a mother, a father, a sister, a brother and a grandmother. There are six of us in the family.
My mother is a teacher of biology. She works in a college. She likes her profession. She is a good-looking woman with brown hair and green eyes. She is forty-four but she looks much younger. She is tall and slim.
My father is a computer programmer. He is very experienced. He is a broad-shouldered, tall man with fair hair and grey eyes. He is forty-six. My father often sings and when we are at home and have some free time, I play the guitar and we sing together. My father knows all about new TVsets and likes to repair old ones. He can fix almost everything: a vacuum cleaner, a washing machine, a fridge and what not.
My parents have been married for twenty-six years. They have much in common, but they have different views on music, books and films. For example, my father likes horror films and my mother likes "soap operas". My father is fond of tennis. My mother isn't interested in sports.
My parents are hard-working people. My mother keeps house and takes care of me and my father. She is very good at cooking. She is very practical. My father and I try to help her with the housework. I wash the dishes, go shopping and tidy our flat.
My grandmother is a pensioner. She lives with us and helps to keep the house. She is fond of knitting.
My sister Helen is twenty-five. She is married and has a family of her own. She works as an accountant for a small business company. Her husband is a scientist. They've got twins: a daughter and a son. They go to a nursery school.
My brother Boris is eleven. He is a schoolboy. He wants to become a doctor but he is not sure yet. Three months ago he dreamed of being a cosmonaut.
I want to become a student. I'd like to learn foreign languages. I think I take after my father. I'm tall, fair-haired and even-tempered. I always try to be in a good mood.
We've got a lot of relatives. We are deeply attached to each other and we get on very well.

ABOUT MYSELF
Before I start talking about my family let me introduce myself. I am ….(My name is … and … is my surname). I am a true Siberian because I was born in Novosibirsk. My parents were also born in this city. I have been living in this town since my childhood.
I was born on the 21 of May in 1994, so I am 17. I have finished school this year. Now I’m a first-year student. I am an ordinary boy of my age and extremely fond of music, books and computers. I devote a lot of my spare time to reading and listening to my favourite groups. I did well at school and was especially good at math and geometry, but also coped with the rest of the subjects. And I’d like to master English.
I’m a very active person and from my earliest days I prefer outdoor games. As for my appearance, everybody says I look like my mum. I have the same blue eyes, a snub nose and chestnut hair. I am not tall and I am not thin.
My family
I think that a family is the most important thing for every person and home is the nicest place. As the proverb says, "East or West, home is best". Family are the people that always love you, support you and help you.
And now I am going to tell you a few words about my family. Our family consists of my parents, my elder sister and younger brother, my mum’s parents and me. We get on well with each other. All they want of me is that I make good progress at the University.
In the evenings, when all the members of our family get together after work and study, we discuss all our problems together.
I love my family dearly and everyone in my family is my best friend. In short, for me it is impossible to live without my family.
My father
Certainly I am going to talk first of my dad. His name is Alexander. He is neither old nor young. He is in his early forties, a little above medium height, rather thin, handsome, with regular features and dark brown hair. He has brown eyes. His manner is friendly and quiet, but he is an energetic person and very sociable.
My dad is indeed a man of great intelligence. He is an engineer and works for a building company. He is a hardworking man and very often he works over time. But despite of his late hours he always has time for my sister, brother and me. Dad can do a lot of things and does well in everything he undertakes. He likes to make or repair something and teaches me to repair furniture. He is keen on tennis and chess but moreover he is fond of going to the country.
My mother
My mummy’s name is …. She is a woman of forty, two years younger than my dad. They have been married for 20 years. My mum is not tall and she is slim, with a lovely face and large blue eyes. Her smile is very pleasant and kind. She has dark hair. My mum is decidedly pretty and looks young for her age. She’s a very elegant woman, always well-dressed. Everybody likes her at once because she is a quiet woman and a good listener. My mum takes a very good care of everybody.
My mum has a part-time job as an interior designer in a large company and gets good money. She is fond of her work and spends a lot of time there. But she is a good housekeeper and cooks perfectly.
My sister
My elder sister Rita is a pretty girl with blue eyes and fair hair. She looks like our mother. She is a 19-year-old medical student. She likes chemistry and biology, and often tells me interesting things she reads in her textbooks.
My brother
My younger brother’s name is Maxim. He is fifteen, and naturally he goes to school. He is a pupil of the ninth form. So he is a teenager, and teenagers are sometimes difficult. He is crazy about football. He plays football always and everywhere. He is rather clever and inquisitive and does well at school. He is mainly interested in sciences and our parents expect a lot of him.
My grandmother
My granny Tatyana is a very tender-hearted and good-looking woman though she has reached a great age. Last week she celebrated her70thbirthday. She is still very industrious and is fond of knitting.
My grandfather
And finally my granddad Sergei. My granddad retired from the railway company and is enjoying life on a pension. My granddad is generous and kind, and I must tell you, he is my best friend. My granddad is so energetic that he brings that energy to us. He reads a lot and thanks to him our family library is very rich.
I also have other close relatives: uncles, aunts and cousins. We love each other.
Housekeeping, family duties and traditions
My mum keeps our house well. Shopping and cooking is nearly half a day’s work for her. We try to help her about the house as much as we can. My sister and I buy food very often. My younger brother and I have our duties about the house. On Saturdays Dad joins us in our work about the house. We do a lot of things together; share our duties to help each other.
It is the custom of our family to have our birthday celebrations together. We usually invite our close relatives and have a festive dinner.
I’ve mentioned that we have a small cottage in the country with a kitchen-garden. In summer we often drive to this place. The nature is very beautiful there. It is the nicest place for me. There is a sand beach and a forest not far from our place. We got used to spend our summer vocations at this place.
That is my story about my family. It’s really nice to know that your family are your best friends.

– Unfortunately not. I am the only child in the family. I have got a cousin who lives in Chicago. We are on friendly terms.

Situations

2. Your brother is to meet a relative he has never seen before. Give him a detailed description of the relative’s appearance so that he could identify him.
SUPPLEMENTARY READING
PROBLEMS OF PARENTS AND CHILDREN
Answer these questions before reading the text.
Is there a generation gap between you and your parents?
Do you often argue with your parents about money, clothes, friends or anything else?
What are the things your parents make you do? Let you do?
When you marry and have children what kind of mother/ father will you be? (describe ideal parents)
Scan the text and outline its main idea.
One of the troubles for some teenagers is that for their parents they are still little kids. Parents sometimes don’t see that they are grown-ups and that they want their own life. As for me I haven’t got any serious problems with my parents. But I don’t like that my mother tries to control me all the time, I think it is too much.
As opposed to my friend I haven’t got conflicts with my parent about money. But sometimes my mother expresses her complain about my clothes.
I have some house chores like tidying my room, washing the dishes, dusting, sometimes cooking. And if do what I should no problems arise here.
The ideal parent is a parent not the kid's friend. You have to be strict enough not to spoil the kid and not too strict for the kid to hate you. You have to be compassionate and caring, but you also have to let the kid learn from his mistakes. You have to provide a safe environment where the kid knows that he is safe from the outside world. And you need to give the kid love and be there when he needs you.
But what do I know about raising a kid, I’m only 18.
THE AVERAGE AMERICAN FAMILY.
Read the text and say what facts were new for you.
The average American family
Most American families consist of a mother, a father and three or four children. There may be relatives - grandparents, cousins, aunts, uncles and in-laws in the same community, but American families usually have their own households. This familiar structure is known as a nuclear family. It is unusual for members of the family ©flier than the husband, wife and children to live together. Occasionally an aging grandparent may live with me family, but this arrangement is usually not considered desirable. Although the nuclear family unit is economically independent of the rest of the family, members of the whole family group often maintain close kinship ties. Visiting between parents and their married children and between married sisters and brothers is frequent when they live close to each other. If they live in different communities, they keep in touch by writing letters and by telephone.
In American family the husband and wife usually share important decision making. When the children are old enough, they participate as well. Foreign observers are frequently amazed by me permissiveness of American parents. The old rule that children should be seen and not heard is rarely followed, and children are often allowed to do what they wish without strict parental control. The father seldom expects his children to obey him without question, and children are encouraged to be independent at an early age. Some people believe that American parents carry this freedom too far. Young people are expected to break away from their parental families by the time they have reached their late teens or early twenties. Indeed not to do so is often regarded as a failure, a kind of week dependent.
Tell about a typical Russian family.
WRITING
Resume or Curriculum Vitae (CV)?
What's the difference between a resume and a CV? The primary differences are the length, the content and the purpose. A resume is a one or two page summary of your skills, experience and education. A goal of resume writing is to be brief since, at best, the resume reader will spend a minute or so reviewing your qualifications.
A Curriculum Vitae (CV) is a more detailed document. It includes a summary of your educational and academic backgrounds awards, honors and other details.
When to Use a CV
In the United States a Curriculum Vitae is used primarily when applying for international, academic, education, scientific or research positions or when applying for grants. As with a resume, you may need different versions of it for different type of positions.
