Our lesson will be in the form of a presentation of the Royal family with many stops and comments. Today we’ll continue talking about the Royal Family. We’ll watch a presentation on the computer about members of the RF and discuss it. What can you tell about Queen Elizabeth II? She’s the Queen of the UK and many other countries in the world. She’s a figurehead. She’s a symbol and a long-standing tradition of the country. The British are proud of her. And the family of Queen Elizabeth II is one of the most famous families in the world and, I’m sure, the most popular royal families nowadays.

COMMENT 1 definitions (P2)

a) Majesty – royal power; forming part of several titles given to a Sovereign or a sovereign’s wife or widow or used in addressing them (Your Majesty, Her Majesty the Queen Mother)

b) Chapel – a place for private Christian worship in a large church; Brit. – a place of worship; a chapel service

c) Succeed -have success; be successful; follow in order: come next after (night succeeded the day); come next; become rightful holder of an inheritance, office, title, property etc. (succeeded to the throne); take over an office, throne, inheritance etc. from (succeeded his father: succeeded the manager)

d) Regime – a method or system of Government; a system of things; the conditions under which a scientific or industrial process happens.

STOP 2 Her Majesty the Queen (P1) The Queen was born in London on 21 April 1926, the first child of King George and Queen Elizabeth. Five weeks later she was christened Elizabeth Alexandra Mary in the chapel at Buckingham Palace. The Princess’s early years were spent at 145 Piccadilly, the London house taken by her parents shortly after her birth. Princess Elizabeth was educated at home with Princess Margaret, her younger sister. After her father succeeded to the throne in 1936 and she became heir presumptive, she started to study constitutional history and law. She also studied art and music; learned to ride and enjoyed amateur theatricals and swimming.

As the Princess grew older she began to take part in public life. She broadcast for the first time in October 1940, when she was 14; she sent a message during the BBC’s children program to all the children of Britain and Commonwealth. Shortly after her eighteenth birthday in 1944, Princess Elizabeth was appointed a Counselor of State during the King’s absence for the first time, carried out some of the duties of the Head State.

STOP 3 Queen Elizabeth at the Golden Jubilee (P3)

Queen Elizabeth expressed “gratitude, respect and pride” after one million people turned out on the streets of London – to celebrate her Golden Jubilee. Forty-seven members of the Royal Family took part in the national party which was watched by hundreds of millions of television viewers around the world including the Commonwealth. Prime Minister Tony Blair paid tribute to the Queen and spoke of the huge public affection for her. The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh rode in the magnificent Gold State coach from Buckingham Palace to St Paul’s cathedral for a thanksgiving service. As the one million – strong crowd sang Land of Hope and Glory and the national anthem, the Queen and the Duke made repeated appearances to acknowledge them.

STOP 4 Prince Phillip (P4, чтение текста учебника, Ex.17 p.134)

Prince Philip was born on 10 June in 1921. He was the only son of Prince Andrew of Greece. The Prince came to Britain at an early age to be educated. He attended a school in Scotland and the Royal Naval College. During the Second World War he served at the sea. The Prince plays an active part in the national life and acts as president or patron of some 800 organizations. The Prince is a keen sportsman.

Slide 8 Prince Charles - His title is the Prince of Wales. He studied at Trinity College, Cambridge, before serving in the Royal Air Force and Royal Navy. He is known for his interest in architecture and the environment. The Prince of Wales, the new Duchess of Cornwall and families after their wedding at Windsor on 9 April 2005

Slide 9 HER ROYAL HIGHNESS THE PRINCESS OF WALES DIANA - The former Diana Spencer married the Prince of Wales in 1981. She won the affection of many people by her modesty, shyness and beauty. Diana was unhappy, she felt unloved and knew Charles loved another and had always did. In February 1996 was the divorce. On August 31, 1997 was the car crash in Paris that took her life. Her brother, Earl Spencer, turned her house into a museum and many people pay tribute to her.

Slide 10 - Lady D - that was Diana's unofficial name, given to her with love and real affection by common people. The world was her stage and she dressed for the role of leading lady. She became a woman of vision, queen of style. This picture was taken in May 1981, a couple of months after the engagement. It was summer 1986.

Slide 11 Princess Anna Her Title is the Princess Royal. She won a gold medal for horse riding in the 1972 Olympic Games and is known for charity work as President of the save the Children Fund.

Slide 12 Prince Edward worked for a short time in the armed forces, as expected of men in the royal family, but later went to work in the theatre. The Earl and Countess of Wessex carry out engagements in support of The Queen, and on behalf of a diverse range of organizations.

Slide 13 Prince Andrew His title is Duke of York. Prince Andrew was a royal helicopter pilot. After serving for 22 years in the Royal Navy the Duke of York is now the UK's Special Representative for International Trade and Investment.

Slide 14 Buckingham Palace is the official residence of Her Majesty the Queen and her family. It isn’t open to the public. The first monarch who took residence there was Queen Victoria. When Her Majesty is in residence the Royal Standards flies over the east of Buckingham Palace.

Slide 15 Windsor is an ancient English town. The world famous Eton College is situated in the town. Windsor Castle is the largest castle in the world. It is the "second home" for the Royal family and, in fact, it is the oldest castle ever used for living.
