John: You make wide use of hardwoods in your country, don’t you?

Nick: I wouldn’t say so. Softwoods are more widely used in different branches of industry, that’s why they are being overcut.

John: As to Australia there is a lack of softwoods there. But now all states have afforestation programmes with fast-growing softwoods.

Ann: You see, in this country large sums are annually allocated for forest protection and afforestation too.

John: Lots of thanks for valuable information. Good-bye.

Dialogue 2

Ann: Hallo, Nick! What are you doing here?

Nick: Hallo, Ann! I am looking through my notes of the last lecture on the mechanization of forest operation in Russia.

Ann; But what’s the big idea?

Nick: I need some figures for my paper at the Students Scientific Conference next week.

Ann: Indeed! I’m sure you will read your paper in English, won’t you?

Nick; I’ve not yet decided that.
