· Over one third (36 per cent) of you have never been able to live in college-owned accommodation, indicating that many of you now have to find your own housing all through college. About 40 per cent are able to live in college accommodation for one year, but few can stay on any longer.

· How safe are you? More than four out of five students have never been burgled or attacked. Students are more likely to have their houses burgled than face any other type of crime – 10 per cent of you have experienced this. Only 3 per cent have been attacked on campus.

Health matters

· 20 per cent of you have suffered from some form of eating disorder? The most common being compulsive eating. Depression is a problem for two out of three of you and 10 per cent have had counseling or other forms of therapy.

· Although 2 per cent of you say you rarely get drunk, 47 per cent of you do get drunk at least once a week and 10 per cent of you admit to getting drunk several times a week. Only 4 per cent of you never drink at all.

· 52 per cent of you have tried drugs. Those in London and the South-East are most likely to have tried drugs. Of those who have used drugs, 90 per cent smoked cannabis; 25 per cent took speed; 20 per cent tried LSD and Ecstasy. Only 6 per cent have used cocaine.

Your conscience

· Would you lie on your CV? The answer was yes from 25 per cent; 64 per cent said no and 10 per cent don’t know. Most of you (79 per cent) have never cheated in an exam.

Final results

The students who respondede to our survey are hard-working and positive. Most of you have thought your career plans through and feel you’re on the right track. You balance your studies with a good social life and enjoy reading and traveling in your spare time. Encouragingly, most of you expect to get a job when you graduate and you’re facing the future with optimism.

Task 1. With your classmates discuss the following:

· What was the most interesting in the article?

· What was the most unexpected and surprising in the article?

· What are the differences and similarities between student life in Britain and in Russia?

Task 2. Project work. Make a list of your own questions for the similar survey. Make the survey within your group or your faculty. Compare the results. Report the results to your classmates.

Student: "Excuse me, Sir, but I don't think I deserve a mark of zero for this exam paper."
Teacher: "Neither do I, but it's the lowest mark I can give."
