Aircraft in-bound for Heathrow are usually required to route via one of four reporting points: Lambourne and Bovingdon to the north, Ockham and Biggin to the south. If necessary, flights will be required to ‘hold’ over one of the reporting points, at l,000 ft separation levels, entering the ‘stack’ at the highest level and gradually stepping down, l,000 ft at a time, until clearance is given to leave the hold at the bottom level for an approach to the airport.

As aircraft approach one of the four reporting points, northern flights will contact Heathrow Approach on 119.72 MHz and southern flight will use 134.97 MHz. After leaving the stack, the no 1 Radar Directors bring the traffic from the four reporting points into two flows towards the extended centreline of the runway. Control then passes to the No 2 Director (on 135.12 MHz) who combines the two separate flows into one stream of traffic ready for landing. At six nautical miles from touchdown, control is passed to the Air Arrivals Controller on 118.7 MHz who gives the clearance to land. After landing, control is taken over by the Ground Movement Controller, again on 121.9 MHz.
