5. Every American family is proud to hoist the national flag - the stars and stripes - on their house on that day and in the evening many of them are fond of watching the fireworks that is arranged in every city.

13. Traditional food on Thanksgiving is roasted turkey with cranberry sauce (turkey is also served on Christmas Eve a month later, on December 24th).
14. Thanksgiving and Christmas are the holidays that unite all Americans, and there’s a lot of money raising arranged by the Salvation Army before those two holidays for the benefit of the poor.

15. Among the holidays observed in the USA are Martin Luther King’s Birthday (January 15, observed on the 3rd Monday of January), Memorial Day (observed on the 4th Monday of May), Columbus Day (October 12, observed on the 2nd Monday of October) and a few others.
16. It goes without saying that there are more occasions to celebrate in the USA, for example Mother’s Day on the 2nd Sunday of May, Father’s Day on the 3,d Sunday of June or Grandparents’ Day on the 2nd Sunday of September.
17. Most of those holidays have become commercialized and demand money spending, but I think it’s nice to show your special devotion to the person you care for.
18. The same concerns St. Valentine Day on February 14th and Halloween on October 31s* which reached us after our country became open and part of the world; they are of course a great fun and make everyday life more enjoyable.
19. In the U.S. calendar that I got from my friend I was also able to find a few professional holidays that were marked there, for example, Secretaries' Day on the 4th Wednesday of April or Armed Forces Day on the 3rd Saturday of May.

22. This cyclic order of all kinds of holidays - not only in the USA but worldwide as well - enriches people’s life and makes them look forward to celebrating them.

§ 1. China’s new marriage bureaus are doing a roaring business among frustrated singles. The world’s most populous nation, where young love once was considered almost a crime, recently opened its matchmaker service in the bustling seaport of Shanghai.
§ 2. Now one has opened in the capital of Peking. Both are doing so well that youth organizers dare to talk about a string of marriage bureaus across the country to cater for tens of millions of lonely hearts.
§ 3. The marriage bureaus are run by earnest young Communist Party cadres. They are serious business.
§ 4. The Peking bureau is in a beautiful temple courtyard with a curved green tile roof where China’s former emperors used to dress before praying at the nearby Sun Altar.
§ 5. It has quickly become the liveliest spot in town on Sunday afternoons.
‘We’re overwhelmed with people,’ said Liu Lian, 29, one of the seven part-time employees who helps singles fill out lengthy application forms. ‘We cannot cope with the number of people we have.’
§ 6. As he explained bureau operations, dozens of eager males lined up in the courtyard. Women registered in a smaller building.
§ 7. ‘There are more men than women at present,’ Liu said. ‘Perhaps the girls are shy. Often one will send her mother to register her.’
§ 8. In the middle of the courtyard, one elderly lady (who did not seem to mind she was ignoring bureau rules) spoke enthusiastically about the qualities of her daughter. A crowd of men gathered to listen.
§ 9. ‘Marriage seekers are allowed three tries. If they reject a series of partners without good reason, they are removed from the books,’ Liu said.
§ 10. As he talked, an anxious-looking tile worker, Liang Zhe Cheng, 27, bustled into the room. He was the first to sign up when the bureau opened earlier this month. He had returned twice to ask if a suitable partner had been found.
§11. Liu told him a meeting, under strict supervision, would be arranged shortly. Liang said his only alternative to the marriage bureau was to ask his parents’ help, ‘but their circle of friends is too small, and I haven’t been able to find a partner myself at work.’
§ 12. The newspaper China Youth News, reporting on the new marriage bureau, wrote, ‘These young people are suffering badly from their failure to get married. Their enthusiasm for work and study is dampened by lack of love, and this is not good for China’s modernization and their own development.’
§ 13. It explained why marriage bureaus are necessary in a country where there are few if any bars or clubs for meeting young people of the opposite sex: ‘The proportion is quite out of balance in various industries,’ it said. ‘There are more young men than girls in porcelain, thermos flasks and bicycles, and vice versa in clocks and watches and the foodstuff trade. This has confronted the young people with not a few marriage difficulties, and our service wants to help them overcome their problems.’

9. I remember well one of my last visits to the theatre which was in November during the autumn break at school.
10. Our teacher of the Belarusian language had bought tickets for Yanka Kupala’s play “Tuteyshiya” (“The Locals”).
11. As our teacher explained to us, this play had a lot of implications, and one of the issues about it was that it helped to develop a sense of identity, which perhaps is the weakest point in the mentality of Belarusians.
12. My classmates and I had arrived at the theatre about twenty minutes before the performance started.
13. We left our jackets in the cloakroom and some of us bought the programme to see the cast.
14. Then we found our seats which were in the ninth row of the pit.
15. As the play was very popular with the public, the house was full, and I think there were no vacant seats in the boxes, the dress-circle, and the balcony.
16. The performance began at 7 PM, and from the very first minute I was deeply impressed by everything I saw on the stage.
17. I must point out that the setting was splendid and the acting was really talented.

19. We laughed heartily at the adventures of the main character who, depending on the situation, changed his surname from Russian Znosilov to Belarusian Znosak and Polish Znosilowski.
20. When watching the play, I couldn’t help thinking about the attitude of our people to the Belarusian history and their language.
21. Yanka Kupala’s point was very clear and simple in his desire to make people remember their roots.
22. This performance helped me to better understand that Belarus deserves a better life and we really must be aware of our history.
23. It won’t be an exaggeration to say that all of us have enjoyed every minute of the performance, so no wonder it was accompanied by hearty applause over and over again.
24. In conclusion I want to emphasize that the role of theatre is not diminished with the progress of science and technology.
25. What is important, in my opinion, is that in the theatre you are part of the action and honest to yourself.
26. Theatre really develops one’s personality and makes us realize what life is about.

§ 1. Faced with the miserable prospect of being unemployed, Pamela Dudley and Susan McAdam decided to do something positive to help themselves. And so now they are both working - at the same job. Pamela, 17, and Susan, 18, do exactly the same job, but they each work only half a week. ‘The job description is clerk typist,’ Susan told me, ‘and it’s mostly typing and filing, so it can easily be shared. I work all day on Monday and Tuesday, and Wednesday mornings, and Pamela works the rest of the week. We meet for about an hour on Wednesday to pass on messages. Apart from that, we don’t get much time together at work and just see each other socially.’
