MURDER ON THE ‘CANADIAN’
Catherine Saks has been murdered on board an express train. One of the passengers. Tom, is trying to identify the murderer. He has been telling Mrs Ruggles, a nice old lady, what he has discovered so far. Tom thinks Mr Faith is the murderer.
§ 1. During the story, Mrs Ruggles had listened quietly, nodding her head, asking questions from time to time. Now she lit another cigarette and looked carefully at Tom. ‘Very, very clever,’ she said. ‘You really are a detective.’
§ 2. Tom grinned happily, unable to hide his pleasure. ‘Maybe you could help me!’ he said. ‘We can find Mr Faith, and then you ask him some questions about his suitcase. That way we might nail him down.’
§ 3. ‘That sounds like fun,’ Mrs Ruggles said. She gave Tom some sweets, then stood up and walked to the washroom, saying, ‘Excuse me a minute, I’ll need fresh lipstick if we’re going out in public.’
§ 4. The washroom door clicked closed, and Tom sat back with the sweets. He had consulted his notebook while talking to Mrs Ruggles, and now he quickly ran through the pages, checking details. Suddenly he realized he’d forgotten to make a note on the cigarette end he had found with Catherine’s dead body. He took the envelope he had put it in from the pocket and copied out the details.
§ 5. ‘What’s that?’ Mrs Ruggles asked, returning from the washroom.
‘Oh, I thought this was a clue.’ Tom answered, opening the envelope and removing the cigarette end.
‘A clue?’
‘Well, the killer might have left it behind by mistake.’ Smiling, Tom pointed at the red smear on the cigarette end. ‘However, I don’t think Mr Faith wears lipstick.’
Mrs Ruggles laughed. ‘I hope not.’
§ 6. ‘Catherine Saks used a cigarette holder, which means her cigarette never touched her lips. So this lipstick can’t be hers.’
‘That doesn’t make sense, Tom,’ Mrs Ruggles said, sitting down in her (hair and picking up her handbag from the floor.
‘Sure it does!’ Tom said, excited. ‘Some other woman was in her compartment that night, smoking.’
§ 7. Mrs Ruggles laughed. ‘Really, Tom, that is far-fetched. If you want me to help with your case, you’ll need to have better theories.’
‘You don’t understand,’ Tom said, impatient that the old lady’s mind worked so slowly. He was trying to think of another way to explain about the lipstick, when his eye fell on one of her cigarette ends in the ashtray. ‘You’d hotter put that out,’ he said.
§ 8. ‘Oh, yes.’
Mrs Ruggles reached for the cigarette end, and ground it firmly out. As she did, Tom realized that it had a red lipstick stain. A cold, sick feeling spread through his body as he lifted his eyes to stare at Mrs Ruggles.
§ 9. Smiling, the old lady reached one hand to her head and lifted off her wig - she appeared to have thick black hair which shone in the light from the window. At the same moment, she took a small revolver from her handbag and pointed it at Tom.
‘Congratulations,’ she said. ‘You‘ve just found the killer.’

1. Hello, I’m Nina D., and I'll tell you about my views on the development of such spheres of our life as physical education and sports.
2. It goes without saying that sport is part of our life - whether we are actively engaged in it or just watch competitions and championships on TV or at the stadiums.
3. Actually, we have to distinguish between professional sports and physical education.
4. I think that physical education is a necessary step which may or may not lead to big sports results.
5. What matters is that physical education at all levels has to become more accessible.
6. You may contradict me by saying that it’s part of our education system, so why worry?
7. Well, yes and no, because sport facilities are not at all widely accessible even in the capital, let alone small towns and villages.

11. But I really think that in the former Soviet Union there was a much greater focus on public physical education than now.
12. There is one more thing that needs to be changed, in my opinion.
13. What I mean is that there is certain gender discrimination in sports here as well.
14. Girls in the West play ice hockey and soccer just as much as boys, and in this country we still find it exotic.
15. And yet, Belarus occupies quite a decent place in the world as far as the sports achievements are concerned.
16. We all know the world champions from Belarus - Olga Korbut and Vitali Shcherba in gymnastics, Alexandr Medved in wrestling, Valery Shary in weight-lifting, Elena Belova in fencing, Alexandr and Andrei Bogdanovich in canoeing, and so on.

16. Нам известны имена чемпионов мира из Беларуси: это - Ольга Корбут и Виталий Щерба по гимнастике, Александр Медведь по борьбе, Валерий 111 арий по тяжелой атлетике, Елена Белова по фехтованию, Александр и Андрей Богданович по гребле на каноэ и многие другие.
17. I can also mention the results of the recent four Olympic Games in Atlanta, Georgia; Sydney, Australia; Athens, Greece, and Beijing, China from 1996 to 2008.
18. Over these years, the national team of Belarus won 66 medals, most of which - 19 - in Beijing, China in 2008.
19. Most Olympic medals won by Belarusian athletes were in field and track events - as many as nineteen! Then comes weight lifting.
20. Our athlete Ekaterina Karsten became an Olympic champion in rowing several times, which is a great accomplishment.
21. The Olympic ice hockey team of Belarus also attracted attention in Salt Lake City, where during the Winter Olympics of 2002 our team defeated Sweden and in the end was the fourth.
22. To conclude, I'd like to point out that physical education and sports are closely connected, and if there is no focus on public physical education, we will probably lose our positions in sports as well.

TO FIND A JOB
§ 1. Money doesn’t grow on trees, and nor do jobs. You can’t simply go out and take your pick of the best jobs around. Often you have to make do with one of the rotten ones - and sometimes you can’t even find them. With millions of people out of work, it’s very much an employer’s market: for every job advertised, there are hundreds of applicants, and the employers can sort out the best. So if your letter is in the pile, how can you be sure it doesn’t get passed over? How can you make your application stand out?
§ 2. The answer may be to play the advertisement game. If advertisers didn’t make us all aware of Bonzo dog biscuits, then we wouldn’t know they existed, and certainly wouldn’t go out to buy them. But as soon as we’re convinced that they will make an enormous difference in our lives, then we want to know more.
§ 3. In the North East of England, school leavers are being given the chance to advertise themselves on television. On a special programme called Bob Slot, unemployed young people are invited to appeal for a job. Rod Griffith, creator and presenter of the programme, stresses that the idea of Job Slot is to make everyone realize that behind the statistics are people willing to work hard.
§ 4. It’s obvious that employers are willing to offer work if they are impressed enough by the candidates. If you show enough ambition and initiative, you’ll get yourself noticed and could well land yourself a job.
§ 5. Take 16-year-old Theresa Mitchell, for example. She wrote to the Daily Mirror last June with a poem entitled ‘Thoughts of a School Leaver’, which explained how she wouldn’t give up the search for a job. The same day that the poem appeared in the paper, the boss of a cleaning firm was so moved by Theresa’s brave attempts that he offered her a job at his office.
§ 6. And then there was Andrew Leslau, who was finding it hard to get an interesting and rewarding job. So 24-year-old Andrew hit on an idea that made him front-page news. Andrew placed an advertisement in The Times, offering £1,000 to the employer who could provide the most interesting job opportunity. Luckily for Andrew, the advertisement appeared on the same day the figures for unemployment went over two million,
§ 7. This was just the thing the media wanted. Within days, Andrew was offered various interviews. ‘It was absolutely incredible,’ Andrew told me. ‘I’d tried writing letters and answering advertisements, but without much luck. Then because of all the attention in the press, I was offered a whole variety of interviews. ’
§ 8. Andrew now works for an estate agent, and, in case you’re wondering, he didn’t have to pay the money. ‘But I would have paid it if I’d needed to,’ he explained.
§ 9. After hearing the success stories of these people, are you convinced of the need to sell yourself? If one way doesn’t work, try another, but whatever you do, don’t give up.
