Life’s tensions. (based on “Speaking Personally” by G. P. Ladousse). The aim of the lesson is to learn to analyze stress situations, define the reasons for them and suggest a way out. Besides, you will practice brainstorming strategies that serve as necessary language investment activities to start a lesson and set pupils’ minds on a particular topic.

 

1. Vocabulary and pronunciation drill. (a) Get ready to translate these vocabulary items into Russian and back into English. (b) Enumerate the emotions and conditions that you experience when you are in danger, when you have to make a public speech, when you are shouted at.

2. Exchange a few micro dialogues with your desk-mate, using approximately the following models.

- Do you ever get panicky? - I often do, for instance when my mother falls ill. - No, never. I act coolly and remain perfectly unruffled in any situation. - How would you feel if somebody laughed at you? - Perhaps, I would force a smile and pretend to be amused. I wouldn’t fly into a rage and lose my temper.

3. Translate the items at home to practice fluent back translation in pairs in class.

· I have experienced a lot. I’m very strong. I am extremely stress-proof and it is almost impossible to embarrass me. The worst will come to the worst before I get upset. · I reckon your sister is strong enough. She seems an imperturbable character who does not often lose calm and composure. Though she may occasionally give way to her feelings, she is seldom embarrassed and never blushes. · Such people are usually weak. They need to develop strategies to cope with the uneasiness and embarrassment they feel in difficult situations. The best advice to them is to react with a sense of humour and adopt a calm and collected attitude. · You are very tired. Pressures are piling up, either at home or work, or both. You are under serious stress, and it may get even worse. You should do something about it. · I don’t know how to help you. You seem a weak person. Although your resilience to stress is quite normal, you tend to get worked up quite easily and on occasion lose your equanimity.

4. Make a list of stresses that can get a person down. E. G.: getting divorced, being abandoned by someone you love, going bankrupt, being overworked, being heavily in debt, having trouble with the police, fearing that your car may be stolen, etc. etc. Which of them are the major stresses of life?

5. Major disasters, such as you listed above, are not the only mishaps that bring you down. A lot of stress is caused by small irritations in our daily existence. Individually, make a list of everything that has irritated you over the past year. Your list may include such things as the noise the neighbours make, the fact that you are slightly overweight or that your new shoes hurt! Explain in a nutshell what you actually did to overcome the stress.

6. Job stress. Such things as our general living conditions, our way of life, whether we live in a town or in the country, etc. affect the amount of stress we suffer. However, the biggest single influence on stress is, very often, the job we do. Arrange this list of jobs and professions in the order of their stress potential. Add to the list any two particularly stressful or unstressful jobs that you know of. Account for your decision to defend your viewpoint.

7. Express your attitude to the following statements. (One at a time).

¨ Чем безопаснее работа, тем дольше можно работать. Я, например, хотел(а) бы уйти на пенсию только в лет 60-65 (как только мне исполнится 55). Но с другой стороны, чем спокойнее работа, тем она монотоннее. Что касается работы устного переводчика, ….

 

¨ Некоторые студенты сохраняют полное спокойствие на экзаменах. Они совершенно невозмутимы и, похоже, даже извлекают из этого удовольствие. У других же руки трясутся, лоб покрывается холодным потом, они спотыкаются на каждом слове. …..

 

¨ Судя по всему, я (не) очень подвержен(а) стрессам. Это (не) дает мне возможность жить спокойно и насаждаться жизнью. Интересно, какая профессия мне бы подошла, если бы я вдруг решил(а) начать с чистого листа? ………….

 

¨ Надо научиться игнорировать всякие мелкие неприятности. Например, какой толк терять душевное равновесие и выходить из себя, если вас толкнули или оскорбили в троллейбусе? Зачем на это обращать внимание? …….
