1. Course description

Course function

The purpose of this course is to introduce the students in the most important issues of Macroeconomics. The course topics focus on economic growth, income inequality, unemployment, inflation, stabilization policy, government debt and deficits, international trade, exchange rates, and financial crises. We will look for answers to questions such as how to achieve economic growth, what causes unemployment and inflation, why are there short-run fluctuations in the economy. We will build models and will show how the behavior of individual economic agents altogether shapes the aggregate economic activity.

Course goals

• Students should understand Kazakhstani and world economies.
• Students should understand the key theoretical models on the macro level and be able to use them for explanations in the economies’ changes.
• Students should be able to read graphs, understand terminology and extract necessary information out of professional literature.
• Students should be able to find and use statistical information to analyze situations in the economy.
• Students should be able to understand government polices and critically analyze their impact on the economics development of the country.
