1. Commercialism – Nike/Addidas seem to have some vested interest in every sportsman in the world, resulting in their lives becoming a by-product of their sponsor’s commercial objective.
2. The domination of Sky - Sky’s domination of the rights to the majority of televised sports games is unquestionable. Paying £16 a month is far too much for televised sport (when compared to the cost of buying a TV licence), even media regulator OFCOM agree the cost of live sport offered by sky is far too expensive.
3. Business culture – The size and following of clubs has grown to such immense levels that they are managed like business empires and seem to forget their own roots and the basic principles of sport, leaving this behind for the greed of marketing and maximising profit.

4. Shaky financing - The financing of most clubs is now based on assumptions and goals taken from examining previous performances, if these aren’t achieved the club is threatened with bankruptcy. Seeing as though most clubs are financed by debt, failing to achieve performances in competitions and not earning cash rewards, can lead to the clubs entering a downwards spiral of steadily increasing debt. This attitude links in with point 3.
5. Ego’s – Don’t get me wrong, everyone likes a character, but with the enormous sums of money players are paid, is it any wonder that they lose touch with reality and become total a-sholes? It has come to a level where we are actually surprised when these sportsmen act even faintly humane.
6. Press – Unfortunately for sportsmen, the press needs to make money too and we all love to read about how our favourite star has gone and done something stupid. Sadly this leads to paparazzi following sportsmen and hounding them, bringing their personal lives into the game and affecting their performance.
7. Blaming the manager – The moment any issue arises or expectations are not met, we look for scapegoat to take all of the blame. This is often the manager. We assume that the problem can be easily resolved by replacing the manager and that the situation is no more complicated than that. We repeat this process over and over again; constantly believing the next manager will be fit for the job.
8. Price of tickets - When did it become acceptable to charge £60 for a bog standard 90 minutes of premier league football. In the grand scheme of things, tickets for all sports are on the way up. Clubs realised that fans are devoted enough to pay ridiculous sums of money to watch the team live at their ground, this does not make it an acceptable thing to do.
9. Biased commentating - Some commentators insist upon supporting a certain team, this is especially annoying as they usually choose to support the games favourite, rather than the underdog. This is not an issue with modern sport in particular. Historically, when specific clubs began to far outgrow the other clubs involved in the sport, commentators realised which side most of the listeners would be supporting and would tailor their commentary accordingly.
10. Criticising Referee decisions – if the referee fails to deal with any situation in the ‘correct’ way, he becomes public enemy number 1. And the defeat can be blamed entirely on him. And there will be a fruitless debate about bringing technology into the game to help the referee out, poor fella.
