1) Describe the town you live in, please.
My native town is located in a picturesque place in the south-east of Belarus. There are some lovely lakes around it, wonderful forests stretch very far. Not far from the town there’s a place where storks live. They give our place its unique charm and atmosphere.
Kalinkovichi isn’t very large. Its population is about 40 thousand people.
The town was founded in 1793. As for its name there are different versions on this account. One of them is that the word “Kalinkovichi” is derived from the word “guelder rose”.
I’d like to say a few words about the centre - that is our square. The Town Council, the District Leisure Centre, the main post-office, a large department store and some offices are situated there. The square looks quite modern. Young people enjoy meeting there in the evening.
We have some opportunities to get education here: there are eight secondary schools, a gymnasium, an agricultural college, two public libraries, a music school, a school of fine arts in the town.
Our local enterprises include the Dairy Products Plant, the Bread Making Factory, the Meat Processing and Packing Factory, the Household Chemicals Factory and the Furniture Making Factory. They provide much of the employment.
Our town is an important railway centre located at the crossroads joining Minsk and Kiev, Gomel and Brest. It makes it much easier for us to get to a great number of cities and towns both in our republic and abroad.
Our native town is a nice place to live in. It’s clean and nice. In summer and spring we admire lots of flowers everywhere.
I love my town. Most of my friends and relatives live here. In conclusion I’d like to add that there’s no place like your home town, no matter what it is.
2) Do you like the place where you are living now? Why (not)?
There’s no place like home you know. My relatives and close friends live here and I do appreciate it. My native town is quite peaceful and clean. Life here is not so turbulent (['tɜ:bjulənt] бурный, беспокойный) as in cities. Though it has some disadvantages. We don’t have so many opportunities for education, work and entertainment as they do in cities.
3) What questions will you ask your parents about the place your family is going to move?
Are we going to live in the country or in town? Is it going to be a house or a flat? Is there a garden or a park near the place? How far is the house (flat) from school? What places of interest are there nearby?
4) Your friend doesn’t know what to choose: to live in a city or in the country.
Give him/her some advice.
If I were you I would like to live in the suburbs of a city. In such a case you would combine the advantages of living in both places. You could enjoy more pleasant ecological situation and at the same time you could take all the chances a city proposes – good facilities for education, work and entertainment.
5) East or West, home is best. Do you agree with it?
Yes, I do. Most people love the place where they were born. It’s a special place which connects us with our nearest and dearest. We grow in the atmosphere of this place and take part in all the events that happen here. I think we are going to be connected to this place with some invisible links for the whole life. It’s not surprising the famous French writer Antoine de Saint-Exuperyonce wrote that immigrants are people without roots.
