Buckwheat

Buckwheat is best adapted to a cool, moist climate, but it is easily destroyed by frosts. It requires a short growing season, generally from 10 to 12 weeks.

Buckwheat is capable of using soil nutrients that are not available to most other crops. Consequently it can be grown successfully on soils which are too low in fertility to produce profitable yields of small grains such as oats, wheat and barley. Buckwheat grows well on a wide variety of soils. It is well adapted to sandy soils and silt loams that are well drained. It tolerates a relatively high degree of acidity. For high yields good seedbed preparation is required.

Heavy application of manure and commercial fertilizers containing nitrogen is not desirable. However, moderate application of manure is beneficial on poor or heavy clay soils. Application of superphosphate is also useful.

Buckwheat is generally sown from June 15 to July 10. Late sowing is desirable because this crop is very sensitive to late spring frosts. Furthermore the seed requires somewhat higher soil temperatures than the cereals for good germination. Also, when buckwheat is sown late, maturity is delayed to a point where most of the blossoming occurs in cooler weather. Under these conditions a better set of seeds is usually obtained.

Buckwheat starts to blossom early and continues to bloom until the plants are harvested or destroyed by frost. As a result there are many flowers and immature seeds when the majority of the seeds are ripe and ready to be harvested. Generally the crop is harvested just before the first killing frost.
