Millets

МЕТОДИЧЕСКИЕ УКАЗАНИЯ ПО ВЫПОЛНЕНИЮ КОНТРОЛЬНЫХ РАБОТ | Cereals | Sugar Beet | Cabbage | Field peas |

Millets are rapid- growing, warm- weather crops. They do not grow satisfactorily where cool conditions prevail during the growing season. Nevertheless, they can be used in northern areas, because of their unique ability to grow and mature very rapidly during the short period when temperatures are favourable.

Under very favourable conditions some of the early-maturing varieties can be harvested for hay 45 to 50 days after sowing. Under average conditions about 65-70 days are required. The later maturing types usually require from 10 to 15 days longer than the early varieties before they are ready for harvesting.

Millets grow well on a wide variety of soils, but they do best on fertile loams that are high in organic matter. Any soil that will give a good crop of corn or potatoes will produce satisfactory yields of the millets. The plants are very susceptible to injury by hot, drying winds or by drought. Millets grow very rapidly and as a result are ready for harvest before the usual hot, dry weather of midsummer arrives.

In the drier areas millets are sometimes planted in rows sufficiently far apart to permit cultivation. This practice conserves moisture and enables the plants to grow satisfactorily even though seasonal rainfall is quite low.

Millets grow best when they are sown in the same type of seedbed required for the small grains. Such a seedbed should be firm, well-worked and free of trash.
