Overview

Russia is geographically based in both Europe and Asia. In reality, Russia has developed in a way that is not quite European, and not quite Asian. We might have long talks concerning a historical development of our country, however we won‘t. For us it is more important to face the fact that crucial changes took place both in Europe and Russia during 1990s. Changes that have led to what we now call strategic partners/geographical neighbors/political rivals/ - namely the Russian Federation and the European Union.

Relations between Moscow and Brussels influence both global foreign policy and domestic affairs of the parties. The EU and Russia co-operate on dealing with a number of challenges, both at international level, as well as in our common neighbourhood. These include climate change, drug and human trafficking, organised crime, counter-terrorism, non-proliferation, the Middle East Peace Process, and Iran.

Russia is the EU‘s third biggest trade partner, with Russian supplies of oil and gas making up a large percentage of Russia‘s exports to Europe. The Ongoing cooperation is based on 4 specific policy areas. These ―common spaces‖, cover

economic issues & the environment; Freedom, Security & Justice; External Security; and Research & Education, including cultural aspects.

How Russia's WTO Accession and coming elections will change Russian foreign policy toward the EU? Or will they not? Please, provide a clearer view of what is—what is not—possible for EU–Russian relations.

Name the core common spaces of cooperation between EU and Russia? List the major claims between parties? Think of benefits that we might give to each other. Check what mutual agreements Russia and EU have?
