Spanish firm AST Modular to deliver facility for large telco
VimpelCom, one of Russia’s largest telecommunications carriers and one of the world’s largest wireless carriers, has contracted AST Modular to build a modular data center in Russia that will complement the telco’s existing 17 brick-and-mortar facilities, according to AST.
Consisting of six modules at full build out, the site will deliver about 32,000 sq ft total, or enough capacity for up to 1,200 IT racks. AST plans to deliver the first module by 2013, saying the capacity will be scaled as VimpelCom’s demand grows.
Vitaly Zadorozhnyi, director of operational risk at VimpelCom, said the telco was convinced by AST’s construction model. “The modular data center construction model offered by AST Modular is very flexible and meets our objectives of improving OpEx whilst reducing construction time and data center power consumption,” he said.
VimpelCom is the sixth-largest wireless operator in the world by subscribers, according to Bloomberg. In addition to telecommunications, the company provides cloud-based services.
The company’s existing data center footprint comprises of 183,000 sq ft of space across five Russian regions: Moscow, Far East, Siberia, the Urals and the Volga region. The new data center will be located in the Yaroslavl region.
AST, a Spanish data center builder, has a number of modular data center solutions, from containers to pre-manufactured modular data rooms.
