IIWC 1310/Semarang Street Childern Camp /11/06-24/06/KIDS, EDU/18+/12

Project Descriptions:

  1. Background: The workcamp will take place in Bangun Harjo village, which is located in Semarang City. This village is very close with Johar Market, the biggest traditional market in Semarang. Most of the local people there live in low economic standard. The condition of houses area is dirty and due to (penurunan tanah) issue in Semarang it can be flooded by sea water in daily basis even thou it is not regularly. In this less advantage condition the children living in this area make money in the street even some of them do not go to school. In cooperation with one local NGO name ASA Rumah Pintar Bangjo which has one shelter for the street children around Johar market IIWC would like to support the NGO’s activity through an international workcamp.

 

  1. Activity: The main activities in Semarang Street Children Camp will deal with manual activities of teaching and playing with children such as making handicraft, necklace, or small something easy to get and possibly arts or music as well as collaborating with local people like sharing the culture. As a part of this project, school visit and university visit, we will visit some schools/university to campaign the street children project and cultural exchange. These activities really need strong motivation and physic. The detailed activities are broken down into the tentative schedule which will be sent together with welcoming email from the workcamp leaders directly.

 

  1. The aims of the camp are:

1. To create educative games for the children so that it will give them more time for positive activities in their home instead of going to street.

2. To create some activities dealing with personal hygiene for local children.

3. To exchange the vision of each country’s living aspects, including education, culture, and way of life, especially which concerns to education and health

4. To motivate the community (especially children in the area)

 

  1. Special remarks: target groups are the children. Be ready with lots of ideas and loves for children.

 

  1. Accommodation: The volunteers will stay in IIWC Volunteer house Semarang with shared toilet and bathroom, sleeping bag and mattress needed, self cooking. IIWC volunteers house Semarang is located more or less 6 km away from the workcamp project site. The group of the volunteers will take public car together to reach the workcamp site almost every day.

Project Descriptions:

  1. Background: Mangkang is a fisheries village located in west Semarang. This project has become annually and continuously project organized by IIWC in answering the needs of preserving the coastal side of North Java Sea in Mangkang. About 1,1 km costal line in Mangkang area is now in danger due to the abrasion of the sea, cutting mangrove by local people and heavy force from the river flows. Before, many kinds of fish and shrimps are living there, but now since the condition of the mangrove forest is getting worse, it is quite difficult to find the species anymore. Fisherman also needs to go further to the ocean to fish and it means much work they need to do to earn money

 

  1. Project: Preserving natural diversity and sea shore from the abrasion because of no more mangrove and too strong waves from the ocean will be the main focus of the camp. Mangkang is the project site for IIWC’s World Tanabata Action since 2008. It is a global project initiated by NICE Japan then was adopted by CCIVS UNESCO in the beginning of 2008 where volunteerism all over the world through IVS planting trees and hang their wishes in Tanzaku paper on a bamboo leaf.

 

  1. The aims of the camps are to initiate the project of protecting the sea shore by planting mangroves and, increase the awareness of the local people, the fisherman, and local students to protect their environment as well as their future.

 

  1. Work: Planting mangrove, and other trees for beach, environment education to local people and children, school visits for environment education, green campaign in city centre, and manage the mangrove fruits to be snacks or foods and promote it.

 

  1. Special remarks: Very hot and less hygiene condition of poor coastal area, be ready with sun block and sun burnt. Bring some ideas for environment education (especially about mangrove and how to take care of it) and Olympic games for environment education for small children aged from 6-12 and adult.

IIWC 1313/Borobudur WHV Patrimonito Camp/Magelang/27/08-09/09/18+/15

Project Descriptions:

  1. Background: Indonesia International Work Camp has been carrying on the patrimonito project since 2008 by organizing Borobudur International Camp. The activity was organized based on the need of the awareness rising among the youth in protecting, promoting and preserving the world heritage site in Indonesia especially in Borobudur temple.

 

  1. Project: The third international work camp organized in Borobudur temple (find the link of UNESCO's inscription for Borobudur) for world heritage volunteer project under the scheme of UNESCO World Heritage Education program, Borobudur Patrimonito International Work camp focuses on the education and awareness campaigns by involving local senior high school students trained as “Young Guardian”, local youth and local people. The target group of the project is visitors of the temple (both domestic and international visitors). The first Borobudur patrimonito work camp in 2009 was able to create a group of 31 Senior High school students under the name of “Young Guardian Borobudur”, create educational material for world heritage education highlighting the active involvement of youth and local community if preserving, promoting and protecting the world heritage site in 6 different languages, organize 6 days awareness campaigns entitled “ Young Guardian in Action: Together we care” with visitors of Borobudur temple as target group. Beside giving education for the youth to take active involvement in the preservation, promotion and protection effort, the camp was also giving change for them to experience the difficulties of preservation, promotion and protection efforts and implement directly the strategies planned in managing the visitors and increasing their awareness on the importance of their role in determining the future of the temple.

This year Borobudur patrimonito work camp is designed as one of the follow up activities for last year project. The camp will be divided into 3 main activities; Preparation of workshop and training for the second batch “Young Guardian”, Training for the Young Guardian, and the awareness campaigns by organizing One stop service desk for visitors of the temple.

 

C. The aims of the camp are:

1. Organizing 4rd batch training for young guardian network for 30 local senior high school students that will act as multiplier for the world heritage education project in their locality.

2. Organizing activities shops for creating promotional education materials or tools for public awareness campaigns on the One stop service stands

3. Organizing public awareness campaign by distributing education and promotion materials

4. Strengthening the cooperation with all stake holder and site management of world heritage site in Indonesia.

 

  1. Work: Workshop/training for young guardian, campaign at the Borobudur temple area and school visit

IIWC1314/Pekalongan Envi Camp/Pekalongan Region/24/06-07/07/ENVI, EDU/18+/12

Project Descriptions:

  1. Background: Pantura or Northern Coastal line of Java sea main road is the longest and biggest road which connect West Java part (Jakarta) to East Java part (Surabaya). As main part of the island, beside java island is too density, java island has been main economic development in Indonesia especially North part of Java or pantura area. Many factories are built, and lots of trees cut down, somehow it creates some destruction to environment. Along the north sea part, many mangroves tree are cut down and bring some problem like rob and abrasion. In Pekalongan, this environmental problem are undertaken by some people or NGOs which concern on planting new mangroves. This workcamp will be first workcamp about mangrove and will be mangrove protection sister project of IIWC.

 

  1. Project: Preserving natural diversity and sea shore from the abrasion because of no more mangrove and too strong waves from the ocean will be the main focus of the camp. This project will also support for global action named World Tanabata Action. Project Descriptions:

  1. Background: Ramadhan, Moslem life and Indonesia are three things that are close related to each other. It was such an interesting suggestion from IIWC partners to organize work camp in Ramadhan Month. Luckily with good and strong partnership with IIWC local partners, in 2012 IIWC organizes the 2nd Ramadhan Study Camp which will emphasize an introduction of moslem culture in Indonesia: Ramadhan and its meaning for Indonesian moslem.

 

  1. Project: This workcamp offers a cultural experience and study about Ramadhan life in Indonesia including the ramadhan working hours, sleeping and wake up management, way of working, schedules, food and drinks, cookies, etc. More than that, volunteers will have opportunity to share their knowledge with the local students in terms of sharing Ramadhan cookies recipes and helping the students with their school studies such as English, Math, etc.

 

  1. The aims of the camp are to introduce moslem culture in Indonesia; to give opportunity to international volunteers an experience of the culture of Islamic celebration in Indonesia; to give opportunity for value added for the local people in practicing Ramadhan in international atmosphere; to promote global understanding and friendship through intercultural learning.

 

  1. Work: Activities 1: Learning reading and writing Arabic, calligraphy, Rebana (Islamic drum). Activities 2: Cooking together for cookies or drinks or special food for lebaran or designing moslem clothes for Lebaran. Activities 3: Making Ramadhan greeting cards and selling it in as charity. 4: Helping school subject study for children.

 

  1. Special remarks: be ready for very early breakfast for Ramadhan at 2.30 am, sleepy day time, praying songs during most evenings, so enthusiastic local children and local people, be patient and have big big smiles!!!

Project Descriptions:

  1. Background: Blora is a quite small town located in the eastern part of Central Java Province-Indonesia. This small town is quite rural since it takes at least 4 hour by bus from Semarang city. This condition results limited access for Bloranese students for having opportunity to meet people from different cultures as part of learning process.

 

  1. Project: In cooperation with the local library of Blora, the volunteer will run some activities of English competition, games and cultural exchange with local people. Last year project was highly appreciated by the local government, local people and the involvement of the local people was so nice.

 

  1. The aims: of the camp are to encourage the teaching-learning activity in local schools in Blora through non-formal approach by promoting the reading habit and cultural diversity.

 

  1. Work: School visits, English Competition, Organizing Bazaar and cultural night, Discussion, cooking session, games and cultural exchanges, etc.

 

  1. Special remarks: be ready to organize bazaar and English competition for students, many ideas for games, competition and cultural exchange. So enthusiastic local children, be patient and have big big smiles!!!

Project descriptions:

  1. Background: The first Workcamp in this area was taking place in 2008 while there was 2 years project called IIWC Cares Jogja after the earth quake in 2006. Recently one the school visited by the workcamps name SD Muhamadiyah Semoya would like to have more IVS activity for the students there. The spirit and motivation brought by workcamp volunteers are expected to raise the motivation of the students to study more for their future.

 

  1. Project: Some programs such as emergency workcamps, NVDA special camp, Notebook Action, donation for rebuilding one kindergarten, donation for sport facilities in primary schools in around this area had been done successfully. There is a need to have international experiences for the students as well as the teacher to build more their knowledge and soft skills in terms of non-formal education approach combined with the formal education at school. At the same time, this project is also to offer the volunteers a chance to see the recovered area of which IIWC and some partners in the year of 2006-2008 did the post earth quake IVS action-the IIWC Cares Jogja as well as to share opportunity to the volunteers to experience local culture of Jogja which is not the touristic side.

 

  1. The aims of the camp are:

1. The main idea is to offer the teacher, students of SD Muhamadiyah Semoya and volunteers a chance for cultural exchange and understanding,

2. Experience and exchange the local culture with your origin culture for global friendship

3. Sharing knowledge with teachers and students in terms of different methods of learning and teaching system in primary school from different countries.

4. Sharing knowledge with teachers and students in terms of learning-teaching about extra subject (skills, engineering, English, sport)

IIWC 1320/WHV Ujung Kulon/Pandeglang, Banten Province/27/08 - 09/09/HERI, EDU/18+/12 NEW

Project Descriptions:

  1. Background: The existence of Ujung Kulon National Park with its native animal the Javanese Rhinoceros is supposed to be supported by the living local culture in surrounded area. This is often neglected due to lack of awareness and economical reason of the local people living in and surrounding. This will be the first WHV workcamp in Ujung Kulon, Pandeglang, Banten in Indonesia. As one of the results of 1st Asia-Pacific World Heritage Regional Forum of Site Managers and Youth NGOs: Linking Netactivities in August 2012 in Korea; IIWC, in cooperation with Ujung Kulon National Park office is to revive a so-called conservation community (kader konservasi) programof Ujung Kulon which is inline with the Young Guardian concept that IIWC established since 2009 in Borobudur Compound Temple.

 

  1. Project: The first project in this site is to start up the Young Guardian Club (YGC) in areas around the Ujung Kulon National Park. This is a strategic issue in Ujung Kulon, to involve local youth to protect Ujung Kulon as for many years forest products have become one of the main incomes for the local people and threatening its food chain which leads to threaten its biodiversity and in the end will deprive the existence of the Javanese Rhinoceros as this is their only habitat. After 5 years experience of organizing the similar project in Borobudur Temple, IIWC is keen to expand the project and invite international volunteers to contribute to the issue in Ujung Kulon.

 

  1. The aims of the camp are:

- to introduce and to promote the contribution by youth through international voluntary service for WH promotion and preservation

- Organizing 1st batch training for young guardian club together with Ujung Kulon National Park Officers, volunteers must work as team to organize a 4-5 days training

- Organizing public awareness campaign by distributing education and promotion materials

- Strengthening the cooperation with all stake holder and site management of world heritage site in Indonesia.

Project Descriptions:

  1. Background: This year IIWC start to spread the international voluntary spirit to West Java. We start to make a project at Cikapundung area. Cikapundung is a river that’s also know as one of dirtiest river in the world. The River was polluted by the waste dump carelessly. When the rainy season coming, the flood can’t be prevented. So, seeing this problem IIWC start to make a project at Cikapundung area to use it IVS to help the local people to increase their awareness of environment. In the beginning if this year we already manage weekend workcamp or voluntary project just for in the weekend. The peoples are interested to propose this project to gain the impact to society.

 

  1. Project: Regarding to the evaluation of weekend workcamp we need to make some poject helping people to solve the problem. The biggest vision of this project is raising awareness of environment to local people in Cikapundung area. The volunteers will follow up the activity such as cleaning river and educate people and student to raising their awareness about their environment.

Our local partner named Abu Hurairah orphanage is one of moslem orphanages located in Salatiga (2 hours by bus from Semarang city center) with 65 children living in this orphanage. This place provides education for children as well as a place to stay. usually we organize workcamp to educate and motivate chidren. The most of the children are orphans, but some others come from a very poor family that can not support for their education. Regarding to previous high enthusiasm came from Ramadhan Study Camp participants in Semarang, in this year we will organize two times Ramadhan camp in different places.

 

  1. Project: This workcamp offers a cultural experience and study about Ramadhan life in Indonesia including the ramadhan working hours, sleeping and wake up management, way of working, schedules, food and drinks, cookies, etc. More than that, volunteers will have opportunity to share their knowledge with the local students in terms of sharing Ramadhan cookies recipes and helping the students with their school studies such as English, Math, etc.

 

  1. The aims of the camp are: to introduce moslem culture in Indonesia; to give opportunity to international volunteers an experience of the culture of Islamic celebration in Indonesia; to give opportunity for value added for the local people in practicing Ramadhan in international atmosphere; to promote global understanding and friendship through intercultural learning.
  2. Work: 1: Learning reading and writing Arabic, calligraphy, Rebana (Islamic drum). Activities 2: Cooking together for cookies or drinks or special food for lebaran or designing moslem clothes for Lebaran. Activities 3: Making Ramadhan greeting cards and selling it in as charity. 4: Helping school subject study for children.

 

  1. Special remarks: be ready for very early breakfast for Ramadhan at 2.30 am, sleepy day time, praying songs during most evenings, so enthusiastic local children and local people, be patient and have big big smiles!!!

 

  1. Accommodation: Abu Hurairah boy’s orphanage in Salatiga; sleeping bag and mattress needed, self cooking

 

  1. Location: Salatiga, Central Java Indonesia. Salatiga has been known as beautiful city in Central Java since its located in mountainous area with fresh weather and cold water.

 

  1. Language: English should be spoken among participants

 

  1. Fee: The participation fee payable upon arrival will be 185 Euros covering foods, local transport, accommodation, administration cost, police certificate, material for the camps, T-shirt, and IIWC certificate of participation. Volunteers are requested to bear their own health and travel insurance. Please keep it in your mind that all personal expenses and free day expenses are excluded.
