Armenia was the first nation to adopt Christianity as a state religion in AD 301. When World War I broke out leading to confrontation between the Ottoman Empire and the Russian Empire in the Caucasus, the new government in Istanbul began to abuse Armenians. About a million of Armenians died during the Armenian Genocide.

In the 1980s, tension grew between Armenia and Azerbaijan over the district of Nagorno-Karabakh. In 1988, there was an earthquake in Spitak, which killed more than 25,000 people and made 500,000 homeless. Volcanic soils of Armeina are fertile. They produce wheat, barley, pomegranates, apricots and quince. Armenian cognac enjoys a worldwide reputation. Popular sports include wrestling, weightlifting, football and chess. The duduk is a traditional woodwind instrument.
