Rough E. R. (rER) also called granular endoplasmic reticulum. The rER appears as a series of interconnected, membrane-limited flattened sacs called cisternae, with particles studding the exterior surface of the membrane. The particles called ribosomes and contain ribonucleinic acid (RN A) and protein. Groups of ribosomes form short spiral arrays called polyribosomes or polysomes.
Main functions are:
-synthesis of proteins for export from the cell
-synthesis of integral proteins of the plasma membrane
