Valves are opened by rocking levers (rocker arms) (7) and are mostly closed by springs. The rotating crankshaft actuates the camshaft (2) by means of gearwheels or chaindrive. The campeak, which is fixed to the rotating camshaft, actuates the rocking lever. If a pushrod (3) has been inserted between camshaft and rocking lever, the rocking lever will be actuated by this latter rod and will open the valve (4). The mechanism of an air-induction valve, exhaust valve or starting-air valve consists of the valve spring (which closes the valve), the valve stem, the valve disc and valve seat.
