Travelling by air
1. If you are very tali, you may prefer an aisle seat. This will hopefully give you 0 chance to stretch your legs into the aisle from time to time. Even better is to get a «bulkhead float»: there is usually more legroom in those positions. Remem-
ber, -however, that those seats go quickly; you should book ahead!
2. If you feel some discomfort, the best way is to
empty your stomach, "Barf bags" are usually in
the pouch (кармашек) on the back of the seat in
front.of you. Using them reduces and/or elimi
nates the discomfort.
3. Because of the altitude (высота), airplanes can
also be quite cold (especially the floor). I always
take a jacket with me on the plane and take one of
the blankets that the airline provides. Wool socks
are not a bad idea either. On the larger planes,
there is usually a little fan that blows on you.
4. Most of the large jets have sound systems
built-in. Many of the newer planes also have built-in
TV systems for movies. Usually, you have to pay a
small fee (generally around five US dollars) to rent
headphones if you want sound. The sound can be
bad as the tapes are played over and over again.
5. US airplanes are pretty good about standard
diet preferences (предпочтения), but you have to
help them out. If you are vegetarian or keep ko
sher, tell your travel agent when you buy the tick
et, and the airlines will usually accommodate you
to your demands.

The seven wells
Long-long ago in one village there were problems with water. So, the men dug seven wells that started to give some water to the local people.
Once, a German man was chosen as the head of the village. He was a wise man and he offered the people to take water free. So everybody was happy to get as much water as they needed.
That man had seven sons. The youngest, whose name was Fritz was the healthiest and strongest in the family. In his childhood he noticed that when some water was taken from the wells, it splashed on the ground. So he didn't like that and once said to his father, "When I grow up, I'll ask the village people to pay for the water from the wells. They splash too much water on the ground". "On, no!" said his father, "water is the most precious thing in this land. It should be free."
A few years passed. The old German died. Then his six sons died of some disease one by one, and Fritz was made head of the village. He immediately made his wish come true. He said to the villagers that from that day they should pay for the water from the wells. All the wells were locked and Fritz kept the keys to the wells.
An old soldier came to the village. He was tired and thirsty and asked for some pure water. Fritz didn't let him drink because the soldier had no money to pay for it. The soldier begged Fritz to help him. But it was all in vain. When the soldier was dying, he cursed (проклял) Fritz.
After his death one of the wells was open but the water disappeared from it. When Fritz's servant opened the other six wells and found no water there, he told it to his master. Fritz was furious. Thus he was punished for his cruelty.

Two candidates
Mr Stone was a very clever man whose thoughts were always on learning. When he applied for a post at Camford University, his friends had no doubts that he would get the job. Even though there were hundreds of candidates willing to try their luck, he made up his mind to take part in the
contest. Arriving at Camford, a very small town, he learnt that the only hotel was already full. So, he had to stay in the same room with another candidate, a cheerful fellow called Adams, about twenty years younger that himself. The committee listened to all the candidates and only two of them, Mr Stone and Mr Adams, were chosen because it seemed impossible to decide who was more skilful. That is why, they were both asked to prepare a report on ancient Greece and to give a lecture on the subject in three days' time.
Mr Stone almost stopped eating and, sleeping. He worked day and night, arranging his thoughts, writing out and learning his lecture by heart. As for Adams, he didn't seem to do any preparation. He spent most of his time playing tennis and going to parties and did not return to his room till
midnight.
On the day of the lecture Mr Stone, waiting for his turn to speak, discovered that his speech had disappeared. Turning his head, he saw Adams take the stolen speech out of his pocket and heard him read it to the audience. Adams read it so well that when he finished there was a storm of applause. Mr Stone was too much upset to protest. So, when his turn came, he could only repeat the same speech word for word, in a low voice.
When the committee went out to decide who the successful candidate was, everyone was sure what their choice would be. However, when the Dean gave Mr Stone's name at last, nobody could believe it! They all had admired Mr Adams's remarkable speech so much! Asked for explanation, the Dean said:
"The reason why we have chosen Mr Stone is that he was able to repeat from memory a brilliant lecture he had never heard before. What a memory must he have! And a fine memory is quite necessary for this post."
As they walked out of the room, the Dean came up to Mr Stone and, shaking his hand, said: "Congratulations, Mr Stone! However, let me give you a piece of advice. Be more careful and don't leave valuable papers lying about!"
