Clothing expenses can be a big part of your monthly budget, especially if you have a large family and kids that are outgrowing their clothes very fast. If you work in a professional work environment or need to wear certain types of clothing for work, you may find yourself needing to buy new clothes every season. However, there are some ways to buy new clothes on a budget and you can even pick up designer labels at a low price. If you’re determined to keep expenses low but need to buy some new clothes, use some of these tips for saving money on your purchases:
1. Take inventory of your closet regularly. Make sure you’re buying new clothes that you actually need, and not duplicates of items you already have in your closet. Before you go out to buy new clothes, take inventory of what you have and make sure that the items hanging in your closet are really things you will wear on a regular basis. Taking inventory of your closet will give you a chance to see what items you already have, and what items need to be updated or replaced. Plan to take inventory at least once every two to three months to keep everything up-to-date.
2. Shop during the after-season sales. Buying new clothes at the end of a season can help you save a lot of money on quality brands and even designer labels. Head to the department stores during the after-season sales to round up all of your basics, and some of the latest trends.
3. Pay for your purchase only with cash. Avoid buying new clothes using a store credit card just so that you can get a discount on your purchase. Make a commitment to only buy new clothes with cash so that you are more conscientious about your purchases and aren’t buying on impulse. Discounts offered on purchases made with a credit card can encourage you to purchase – and charge more – so you will probably end up saving money when buying new clothes with cash.
4. Look for deals online. If you have your eye on a particular item, check the current price of it from several other retailers online. You may be able to get a good discount and some great deals on new clothes just by shopping online and catching an online sale. Some retailers also offer free shipping and other incentives that can help to cut down the cost of your purchase and keep you within your budget.
5. Consider the value of your purchase. No matter what you’re buying – whether it’s a new coat or a pair of pants – it’s important to consider how often you’re going to wear it. Consider the value of each purchase so that you can expect to wear the item several times over the course of its lifetime. Avoid buying some of the latest trends and modern pieces that will be outdated within a few months. Focus instead on building up a wardrobe of basics, and you’ll end up saving money when buying new clothes.
