Year 3 Pupils develop an understanding of the qualities needed to make a simple drawing. They develop an awareness and understanding of the wide range of different painting and printing styles and methods in art. They also experience how to shape and mould clay and apply colour using glazes. They learn about colour through the colour wheel and practical painting sessions.

Year 4 Pupils develop the ability to record from first-hand experience. They explore mark making using a range of different drawing materials and also develop a 3D model from preliminary drawings, using a range of materials.

Year 5 Pupils develop the ability to record from first hand and second-hand experience and draw three dimensional objects using simple forms. They learn the importance of using colour to create a balanced composition using painting materials, build clay into simple relief using clay tools, and use screen printing to create a design.

Year 6 Pupils build on their drawing skills and develop their understanding of how to create a sense of depth and space using line and tone. They are encouraged to make an intuitive response to the materials used and the marks they make, and to explore and understand how colour is used as a form of expression. Finally they develop their skills of manipulating clay into different shapes and forms using their hands and simple clay tools.

Curriculum: Design Technology

Aim The principal aim of the Design Technology department is to develop an awareness of design and how it relates to the world in which we live.

Approach Pupils receive two lessons each week which, during the course of the year, also includes a course in Food Technology.

Design Technology is essentially a practical subject requiring a practical approach in every activity. The design aspect of the subject must be based on experience and experiment.

Pupils are encouraged to analyse different products and understand how and why they are designed and made. We look at the materials used and assess if they are appropriate to the product’s function.

Pupils are introduced to a wide range of materials, including wood, foam board and electronic components and have the opportunity to develop their measuring, cutting and making skills.

They are also shown how to create high quality projects by developing their creativity and innovation through the design process, combining their design with practical craft skills.
