A spokesman for Bolzoni-Auramo says: “One trend we have seen is a move towards bigger attachment units for forklift trucks, responding to customer’s changing needs and to the growing size of diameter and width in paper roll sizes. Customers are looking for more intelligent clamps, such as adjustable hydraulic systems and testing devices.”
“Kalmar is seeing strong demand for forklifts in Europe,” says Rietz. “The long-term driving force is in sawn goods and the building sector, where more forest products are being used due to rising steel prices.
Svetruck produces four log handling machines. These offer different grapple areas; for example, the TMF 12/9 has a grapple area of 4.15sq metres, while the TMF 28/21 offers up to 8.2sq metres.
Mantsinen saw a rush in demand for secondhand equipment after the winter storms. “They caused a huge amount of damage to Swedish forests and took practically all the available secondhand equipment out of the market,” Hamalainen says. “Sweden needed a lot of machinery to clear all those fallen trees. The situation opened the door to the Swedish market. The storm opened a new market for us.”
Growth in demand for the largest grapple-size log handling machines is being driven by growing use of rail transport to export sawn timber across Europe. Rail offers greater width and capacity than trucks, with cargo assembled into trains of up to 50 wagons.
Forest products handling is undergoing dramatic innovation. This summer saw Finnish paper giant Stora Enso launch a new transport unit, known as the secu (Stora Enso Cargo Unit), to transport its exports from ports in southern Finland to its hub at Gothenburg in Sweden, then onwards to dedicated terminals at Zeebrugge, Immingham and Tilbury.
Each secu is 12.8 metres long by 3.6 metres wide – as tall and heavy as three 40ft containers at 80 tonnes. They are designed to be carried on specialised ro-ro vessels in cassette-like modules, aiming to reduce damage in transit.
Stora Enso is expanding the new system, consolidating its shipments out of northern Finland through dedicated terminals at the ports of Oulu and Kemi. Stora Enso aims to convert its traffic flow from the Nordic countries to secu units by the end of the year.
“It is difficult to predict whether the industry will adopt the secu as standard,” says Rietz. “It is something Kalmar will watch very closely, as it could reduce the industry’s need for forklift trucks. Maximising its flows enables Stora Enso to improve efficiency, and there is a danger of falling demand for forklift equipment as a result.”
