Out of work

In Britain a lot of people are out of work. Tracey Chapman is 18, and she left school a year ago. She lives in the North East, an area of high youth unemployment. She hasn’t been able to find a job yet. Her father doesn’t understand her. He started working in a steel mill when he was 15. Things are different now, but he thinks she should start bringing home some money. She gets her unemployment benefit, but that isn’t much and she is fed up with queueing for it every Thursday. She hates having to ask her Mum and Dad for money. Her mother gives her a couple of pounds for tights but she can’t stand seeing Tracey at home all day. Tracey has almost given up looking for a job. She buys the local newspapers every day but she is really tired of looking through the Situation vacant column. There are 50 applicants for every job. She was interested in being a dentist’s receptionist because she likes meeting people, but now she would take any job. People ask her why she doesn’t want to move to London, but she doesn’t want to leave her family and friends. She is scared of living on her own in a big city. At last she decided to go to the Careers Advisory Service. She was asked to complete the following questionnaire.

Ex. IV. Read the text:

George Morley is 54. Until last year he was a Production Manager in the textile industry. He has been working for the same company since he left school. He had a good job, a four-bedroomed house and a company car. When his company had to close because of economic difficulties, he became redundant.

It’s funny really, he doesn’t feel old himself, but it isn’t easy to start looking for a job at his age. He has had so many refusals. Now he is frightened of applying for a job. All interviewers are twenty years younger than he is. He is interested in learning new skills, but nobody wants to train him. He can see their point of view. He will have to retire in ten years. He is tired of sitting round the house. He has worked hard for nearly forty years and now he is terrified of having nothing to do.

When he was working he was bored with doing the same things day after day, but now he would really enjoy doing a job again. It is not because of money… He got good redundancy pay, and the house has been paid for. He just needs to feel useful, that’s all.
