The aim (for the teacher): to teach the students the structure of an argumentative essay and writing it
The aim (for the students): you’ll learn to agree and disagree with smb’s viewpoint, prove your viewpoint and persuade your interlocutors providing valid arguments
1. Listen to the text “ Foreign Languages in Our Life” twice and arrange the following items in right order so that it’ll become a plan of the text. Read the points before you listen the text.
· English is an international language
· Foreign language is important in many spheres, beginning with work and ending with entertainment
· Studying foreign languages broadens one’s outlook
· Learning a language takes time
· Many world-famous writers are English
The text script: Learning a foreign language is not an easy thing. It is a long and slow process that takes a lot of time and efforts. Nowadays it is especially important to know foreign languages. Some people learn languages because they need them for their work, others travel abroad, for the third studying languages is a hobby. Everyone, who knows foreign languages can speak to people from other countries, read foreign writers in the original, which makes your outlook wider. It is not surprising that many intellectuals and well-educated people are polyglots. I study English. Nowadays English has become the world’s most important language in politics, science, trade and cultural relations. Over 300 million people speak it as a mother tongue. The native speakers of English live in Great Britain, the United States of America, Australia and New Zealand. English is one of the official languages in the Irish Republic, Canada, the South Africa Republic. English is one of the official languages of the United Nations Organization and other political organizations. Half of the world’s scientific literature is in English. It is the language of computer technology. To know English today is absolutely necessary for every educated person, for every good specialist. The English language is a wonderful language. It is the language of the great literature. It is the language of William Shakespeare, Jonathan Swift, Walter Scott, Charles Dickens. The great German poet Goethe once said, “He, who knows no foreign language, does not know his own one.” That is why in order to understand oneself and environment one has to study foreign languages.
2. Many people learn FLs nowadays. Is it so necessary, in your opinion? Why is there such a tendency to study FLs? Express your view point using substituting table in writing:

3. As you know, studying a FL is quite popular now. There’re many ways to master a language, thanks to them you may combine studies and fun. Choose those you or your friends use and write whether it’s effective or not, explaining why you think so (you’re welcome to add your own ones). See the example and use the following beginning words and phrases:
E.g. I strongly believe that only drilling grammar excises will not help a person to speak but some scientists are convinced we should give a lot of time to this aspect to be understood by others correctly.

The ways to master the language: It is well known that reading books in the original, listening to the BBC news, communicating with the English speaking people will help a lot.. It is a long and slow process that takes a lot of time and patience.
4. H/t. Now you know a lot about studying foreign languages. At home write an essay “ It’s necessary to learn foreign languages in the 21 century” (200-250 words)
