PRESENT TENSES

Ex. 1. Give the correct form of the Present Simple of the verb in brackets:

1. Your father (to know) that we are here. 2. Those cameras (to cost) too much for me.3. Paul (to seem) interested in the topic. 4. The bus (to stop) at the corner. 5. Ex. 2. Read the sentences and correct them as the information is wrong. Give two correct sentences in the Present Simple:

Pattern: The sun goes round the earth.

The sun doesn’t go round the earth.

Ex. 5. Choose the correct form:

Ex. 6. Ask questions to the underlined parts of the following sentences in the Present Progressive:

1. It is raining heavily outside. 2. Theyare trying to translate this exercise. 3. He is drinking teain the garden. 4. Cinema audiences are declining now. 5. She ’s listening to the rock music. 6. You are trying to persuadehim, but he won’t listen. 7. They’ve moved to a new house and are buying new furniture. 8. You are constantly mispronouncing this word, because you’re inattentive. 9. None of them is taking part in the discussion: they are not ready. 10. Ellen is reading a bookon the veranda.

 

Ex. 7. Use the Present Simple or the Present Progressive Tense instead of the infinitives in brackets:

Ex. 8. Put the verb into the most suitable form, Present Simple or Present Progressive, with a future meaning:

Ex. 12. Supply one of the Present Tenses: Present Simple, Present Progressive, or Present Perfect:

Ex. 13. Open the brackets using the verb in the Present Prefect Progressive Tense:

Ex. 14. You have to say how long something has been happening using Present Perfect Progressive:

Example: It is snowing. It began snowing two hours ago. It has been snowing for two hours.

1. Jane is reading. She began reading an hour ago. She … for an hour.

2. My sister is knitting a new sweater. She started knitting a month ago. She … for a month.

3. Sam is studying German. He started studying it two years ago. He … for two years.

6. You are taking music lessons. You began taking music lessons six months ago. You … for six months.

7. Mary is looking for a job. She began looking for it in December. She … since December.

9. Ann is making her report on Byron’s poetry. She began making it a week ago. Ann … for a week.

10. My sister is working in this school. She started working here 2 years ago. She … for two weeks.

 

Ex. 15. Use these sentences to make questions with “ How long…”?:

Example: It is snowing – How long has it been snowing?

Ex. 16. Say, if these sentences are grammatically right or wrong. Correct the ones which are wrong:

1. I am waiting here for an hour. 2. They have been married since January. 3. How long do you know Ann? 4. Mary has a bad cold for the last few days. 5. Ex. 17. Supply Present Simple, Present Progressive, Present Perfect or Present Perfect Progressive instead of the verbs in brackets:

Ex. 18. Translate the sentences from Russian into English using the Present Simple Tense:
