Foreign languages at a primary school

I. Read the text.

Nowadays at many primary schools pupils study foreign languages, for example, in the town of Abakan at schools number 1, 10, 8 and others. Pupils have classes of English or German twice a week. There are special English books for pupils of primary schools. The authors of these books are different, for example, Vereschagina, Biboletova, Bim, Galskova and others.

English lessons of a primary school have some specific features, for example, teachers must organize a short interval that is accompanied by children’s songs, poems, rhymes in English.

Some parts of a lesson are given (organized) in a form of games, because children at the age of 7-9 are fond games very much and they learn the English alphabet, new words, grammar structures playing educational games.

One day a week the students of the pedagogical department of our college go to practice to school number 1 to give English lessons. They try to do their best in order to give lessons more interesting. The students make visual aids, hand – made articles, grammar tables, crosswords, distributing didactic cards, bring toys and dolls. At the college the students study not only English but also Methods of teaching Englich at a primary school. At lectures they get necessary knowledge about teaching Englich at the initial stage. At seminars the students discuss theoretical questions and the plants of their English lessons.

The students pay attention to children’s pronunciation, they teach pupils to pronounce English sounds correctly, to make up sentences, to ask questions, to read, to compose different stories. Pupils can speak about their families, toys, animals, sport, games and many other things.

Many children have good memory and work hard at home and at the lessons. They know many English words, phrases, poems, rhymes, and songs. They know numerals and can count toys, tables, windows and counting material.

At the lessons pupils are attentive and take an active part in any work. Pupils of a primary school can study English successfully if a lesson is interesting, well equiped, well planned, and if a teacher follows (keeps) specific features of a lesson of a foreign language at a primary school.
