From north to south the Region crosses three climatic zones – arctic, sub-arctic and moderate, the coastal line is washed by the White, Barents and Kara Arctic Seas.

the population was 1.4 million people.

Territorially the Region comprises the Nenets Autonomous District, 20 administrative districts, 14 towns, 38 working settlements, about 4 thousand villages, as well as the islands of Novaya Zemlya and Franz Joseph Land.

The administrative centre of the Region is the city of Arkhangelsk, which was founded on the Tsar Ivan the Terrible’s order of March 5, 1584.

The Arkhangelsk Area is famous for its rich history. From here and straight into Eternity walked the scientist and reformer Mikhailo Lomonosov. The Pomor Land selected by Peter the Great for building the first Russian sea port became a cradle of the Russian Fleet.

The first thing to be seen is the historical and cultural complex of the Solovetsky Archipelago, listed by UNESCO as a world heritage monument, which comprises about 200 monuments from the 3d millennium B.C. to the present times.

The North is a clear and inexhaustible source of Russian folk culture. The collections of the Museum Union «Artistry Culture of the Russian North» comprise such a huge number of ancient Northern icons and pre-historic objects of pagan culture that many other museums in the world might feel envious. The State Museum «Malye Korely», an open-air museum of wooden architecture and folk arts, the largest in the world, is also in the Region.

The Arkhangelsk State Museum of Wooden Architecture and Folk Arts «Malye Korely»

The open-air Museum is situated 25 km from Arkhangelsk on a picturesque bank of the Northern Dvina River. The Museum exposition takes the area of 140 hectares and comprises more than 200 monuments of wooden architecture of the 17th - 20th centuries.

Solovki.

It is the first museum of this sort in Russia; its concept envisaged the creation of the whole complex of thematically arranged expositions, local open-air museums, and special ecological routes on the Archipelago. The Museum collections list has about 56 thousand entries, some objects belong to the pre-historic island culture dating back to the III-I millennium B.C., some reflect the history of the Solovetsky Monastery and its domains. Under the Museum’s authority there are about 800 archeological monuments, as well as 189 monuments of history and architecture.

Arkhangelsk region, as the biggest region of European part of Russia, occupies an extremely important geographical position in the country. For more than 400 years, Arkhangelsk has been the most important Russian seaport. It ensures not only trade, but scientific links with the rest of the world, for example serving as a center for scientific marine research. All of the great expeditions to the Arctic and to the North Pole began here. The strategic importance of Arkhangelsk is its proximity to the Northern Atlantic. The space launching site "Plesetsk", the Center of Nuclear shipbuilding in Severodvinsk and the Russian nuclear polygon on the Novaya Zemlya are located here. The Arkhangelsk region is a unique area with wealthy natural resources. Besides the traditional natural wealth such as forestry, which brought large enterprises of the timber chemical complexes here, the region has huge deposits of oil, gas and diamond resources. The Arkhangelsk region is rich in mineral raw materials. Preparations are now underway for mining diamond deposits, lime, dolomite, gypsum, building rocks, raw materials for cement production, iodine waters and jewelry agates. Since the initiation of economic reforms in Russia, the enterprises of the region have used every opportunity to cooperate with foreign partners. There are about 180 enterprises with the participation of foreign capital working in the region, including the service sector. The region established fruitful working contacts with many European states and industrial companies which are attracted by the developed infrastructure, opportunities for the development of manufacturing and the quiet geopolitical situation. Co-operation with foreign partners in using the Plesetsk Cosmodrome (the only launching site in Europe) has good prospects. It offers a wide range of opportunities for joint scientific research and other projects in cosmic space. Many students from Arkhangelsk are trained abroad. So, young people from the region are being educated in Western business practices.
