Chapter Dulce Domum
Vocabulary tasks:
1. Paraphrase the following words and expressions from the chapters you have read and recollect the situation in which they appear in the text:
a long outing; slackening; to beset; inmate; wistfulness; silhouetted; summon; inter-communication; to recapture the filament; scout; asunder; to tear heartstrings; callous; imperious; cockle-shell border; deserted look; self-reproach; laborious savings.
2. Find in the text English equivalents to the following:

3. Compose a dialogue using the words and expressions from the chapter under discussion.

Reading tasks:
1. Ask at least 7 questions on the content of the chapter.
2. Prepare good reading and precise translation of the passage:
‘The rapid nightfall of mid-December had quite beset the little village…’ – ‘… and knock out his pipe on the end of a smouldering log.’ (p. 57)
3. Read and try to make up your own variant of the translation of the carol (p.67).
4. Give a summary of the chapter.
Stylistic tasks:
1. How is the mood of the Mole shown in the chapter? Quote the text and comment on it.
2. Find the description of the carol-singers and comment on it.
3. What means are used to present ‘muttered conversation’ (p.68-9)?
Chapter Mr Toad

Reading tasks:
1. Prepare good reading and precise translation of the passage:
‘Then the brutal minions of the law fell upon the hapless Toad…’ – ‘… where an ancient gaoler sat figuring a bunch of mighty keys.’ (pp. 84-5)
2. Explain and expand on the following:
‘They set off up the road on their mission of mercy, Badger leading the way.’ (p.74)
‘After some three-quarters of an hour the door opened, and the Badger reappeared, solemnly leading the paw a very limp and dejected Toad.’ (p.76)
‘They arranged watches accordingly.’ (p.78)
‘Meanwhile, Toad, gay and irresponsible, was walking briskly along the high road, some miles from home.’ (p.81)
‘Next moment, hardly knowing how it came about, he found he had hold of the handle and was turning it.’ (p.82)
3. Compose at least 5 questions on the content of the middle part of the chapter, so-called Toad’s outing (p.81-3).
Stylistic tasks:
1. Find in the chapter words and expressions characterizing the changes of Toad’s mood in different situations.
2. Comment on the gullibility of the Rat. Find the expressive means showing his attitude towards the situation.
3. What can you say about the speech of the Chairman? What legal terms are used in this part? What is the function of them?
