It goes without saying that a wedding ceremony is a special custom that exists throughout the world. On the whole, the significance of the marriage is similar in every country, but still every nation has its own original traditions concerning the wedding ceremony. Here’re some of them.
According to the Arabic wedding traditions firstly the groom’s family visits the bride’s one and asks for her hand in marriage. After the bride’s family agrees, they drink tea or coffee together and discuss all the wedding arrangements. Then follows a party for the men, the so-called “stag night”, and one for the women. At the reception itself the guests enjoy the celebration, and the newly married receive the wedding presents that are usually jewellery or gold.
As compared with the Arabic wedding the traditional Chinese marriage consists of three parts. Before the man proposed to the woman her family must accept the presents sent by the groom’s one. The second stage is checking the horoscopes. So, if the signs are good the two families ask the gods for their help. Besides, before the celebration the groom’s family is supposed to pay the brides one for loosing their daughter. At the ceremony the couple are dressed in silk. The groom gives ceremonial gifts of pork, chickens, candles and clothing to the bride’s relatives. Usually the reception is a lunch or dinner with the entertainment by a singer or band.
Speaking about Indian people I’d say that they’re a little bit suspicious, as they pay too much attention to their horoscopes, and check the signs very carefully before they choose the right wedding day. On the ceremony the bride wears a red sari, as it is believed to bring her good luck. Apart from that, her hands and feet must be painted with henna, and the groom’s relatives place a small mark of red paste on her forehead to show that this moment she is a married woman.
Japanese women for example wear kimonos when they get married, but for the reception they usually prefer to change into a western bridal dress. As a matter of fact, songs and speeches are all the part of the entertainment during the reception. And in the end they have an unusual but very nice custom: each guest is given a present for coming to the wedding.
As for our country, I can say there’re also some distinct peculiarities in marriage traditions. For instance, before the formal part of the wedding the groom has to make the so-called “buying of his future wife” by giving different presents to the bridesmaid. The traditional wedding costume for the bride is a white dress, as it symbolizes purity; and for the bridegroom it is a smart suit. Before the reception the parents of the couple give them a piece of a special wedding cake with honey and salt as symbols of happiness and prosperity.
