It is believed that the profession of a doctor is one of the noblest and vital ones. That makes it comparable with the profession of a teacher. I’m quite certain that being a good doctor and a good teacher demands of a person quite the same qualities. For instance, both a good doctor and a good teacher should be devoted to the cause and they should be genuinely interested in what they are doing, as their work is connected with serving the humanity. Besides this, no person can be allowed to treat people if he or she doesn’t have a strong sense of responsibility, since people entrust doctors with the most precious thing they have – their health. This again allows to draw a parallel between teaching and medicine.
What’s more, a good doctor must be very qualified, as his work requires advanced education and special training. An ignorant doctor can be a disaster for his patients, so a good doctor should never forget about constant self-education to remain up-to-date. A good teacher also must educate himself all the time as both the Sciences and the Humanities are always developing and inventing something new.
In addition, both teaching and medicine imply working with people. This means that e good doctor must know how to communicate successfully, his speech must be clear and convincing and assuring. He should be kind to his patients and always sympathize with them. Moreover, it would be great if all doctors had a sense of humour to be able to cheer up and encourage his patients. He should also be positive and hope for the best. Only on condition that the doctor believes in his patient’s recovery the latter will believe in this himself.
Furthemore, a good doctor must show a great deal of patience, as sick people can be very hard to deal with, especially elderly people and children. As for pediatricians, they should obviously have some extra qualities as they face more problems. It is widely known that sick children can sometimes be really unmanageable. They are afraid that the doctor may hurt them, so they cry and don’t allow to examine them or to give them medicines. A good doctor should know how to win their favour. One of the difficulties is that little children not always can explain properly, what symptoms they have, and sometimes they can also be very sly and try to conceal them from the doctor. So a good pediatrician should be good at children’s psychology as well as at medicine.
But, of course, a good doctor should also have some special traits which a teacher doesn’t need. For example, he must be cool and strong-willed for not to shudder at the sight of the human blood or other unpleasant symptoms.
All in all, a good doctor should have many qualities as he is doing the most vital job of all, and many of those qualities coincide with the ones a good teacher is expected to have.
