Glossary
Acquisition is the process of getting to master a language in the natural settings
Acquisition order is the succession of getting to master one area of grammar after the other
Acquisition sequence is the succession of getting to master a certain grammar structure (e.g. a succession of getting to master the structure of “negations”)
Behaviourism is a psychological theory that explains human behaviour by the formula Stimulus-Response (S-R) and views acquisition of behaviour as the formation of automatic habits
Core grammar is a set of rules that make the language use predictable (makes the language grammatical)
Creole language (“Creole” means “derived”) is the language of the children born into the Pidgin English speaking parents and developing a language that is more complex and grammatically organised than the original Pidgin English input from parents
Critical period is the life period (childhood up to the age of 6 or according to some scholars 12 years but in any case before puberty period) when the humans are especially sensitive to language acquisition
Generative grammar is the language mechanism of producing infinitely complex sentences
Innate is inborn and inherent
Language Acquisition Device (LAD) is the mechanism in the brain that provides for the subconscious language analysis and drawing generalities about the language rules (LAD is considered to be most active and crucial in children acquiring their native tongue)
Language parameters (switches) are the rules of using a particular language and implementing the general “principles” of the language
Language principles are the basic assumptions about the language (e.g. words can label the world around us, words can express attitudes and desires, there are prepositions that show locations of things etc)
Learning is the process of getting to master a language as a result of instruction
Linguistic competence is intrinsic knowledge of grammar rules that enable the language user to produce an infinite number of correct sentences
Peripheral grammar is a set of language devices that are not fully explained by regular rules (makes the language authentic)
Transformation grammar is a set of procedures to interpret the deep meaning of sentences
Universal grammar is the grammar system that is typical of all the known human languages (observed most consistently in the child’s language)
