Essential duties and responsibilities

The volunteers will be involved in teaching number work and reading, assisting the social worker in counseling, help with cleaning and cooking, organizing games and art lessons, and playing with the kids.

The volunteers will work 5 hours in the morning and 2 hours in the afternoon. Saturday and Sunday are free. Sometimes, depending on the nature of work, the time can be extended.

Qualifications: No particular expertise or skills required. Participants should have a

Positive attitude, be ready to adopt and enjoy simple living conditions, be flexible and patient. However, specialized skills and expertise (such as creative arts and counseling/nursing) will be used accordingly.

Language: English

Duration of the project: 1 to 6 months. The program is running throughout the year.

Orientation: Orientation meeting will take place in Nairobi before proceeding to the project.

Accommodation: At a host family. Please note that you will share the typical living conditions of a Kenyan family. There is electricity and shower at the accommodation.

Location: Nakuru is located in Rift valley, approximately 2 and a half hours drive from Nairobi. Public transport to the project site is available. The closest Hospital, Markets, Post Office, Banks (ATMs), Internet and other social facilities are located in Nakuru, 5 minutes drive from the project site. The terrain is flat and the weather is hot and dry.

Participation fee: 900 Euro for six months and 600 Euros for 3 months

GVDA: MLTV05 - EDUCATION PROGRAM FOR ORPHANS IN KISUMU, NYANZA PROVINCE

This volunteer project is organized since 2009 to support an Orphanage in Nyanza province. The orphanage provides a loving and safe home for orphaned, neglected and abandoned street children. It is based in Kisumu which is the third largest city in Kenya. Kisumu has a population of approximately 300,000 and is located on Lake Victoria almost on the Ugandan border. In Kisumu, there are many orphans who, without help, would have no future. The Orphanage is a home to about 130 orphans who lost their parents (usually to AIDS) and street children from the slums. There are primarily boys, due to the "preference" for girls as household labor help, and the difficulty for boys to stay at home if their mother marries someone other than their father. At the orphanage they are loved and cared for well, but the need is still so great. We are seeking volunteers to assist in the Primary School, Secondary School, farm and at the orphanage.
