UNIT X MAKING PRESENTATIONS
Ex. 1 Read the text and answer the questions below.
What is the secret of good presentation? The key is preparation. So the first step is to find out who you are going to be presenting to. Firstly, how much does the audience know about the subject? Secondly, are they from the same or different countries? Your language should be understandable to everybody. It is necessary to visit the room where you will be giving your presentation beforehand. Check you are familiar with the equipment. You must feel comfortable and relaxed.
Now you can start preparing what you are going to say. The most important thing is the opening of the presentation that includes a brief introduction of the subject of your talk. Then the main body of the presentation comes. At last, the conclusion that contains the summary of your talk and your final opinion or recommendations. Finally, the question and answer session takes place.
Now the most important stage is the opening, so write it down, then record it, listen to it and practise it again and again. After that you can use your notes. Write the whole presentation or just like an essay. Then select the key points. Next step is to buy some small white postcards and write no more than one or two key points or key phrases onto each one.
During the presentation face the audience at all times. Remember that not only what you say but also how you say is very important.
1. What do you need to know about the audience?
2. Why is it so important to make your speech understandable?
3. When do you feel comfortable and relaxed during the presentation?
4. What are the most important parts of any presentation?
5. What is the most important moment in the presentation?
6. What do you need postcards for?
7. What pieces of advice do you find the most helpful?
