Essay 4: Analyzing Visual Arguments

  1. Choose a print ad as a subject for your short essay. This website will give you an idea of what you are trying to locate: http://adoholik.com/2011/01/02/24-top-print-ads-of-2010/, but you may get your ad from anywhere: online sources, magazines, newspapers, and so on.
  2. Write a visual argument analysis of this ad.
  3. The essay must have a three-part structure: intro, body, and conclusion.
  4. The body must contain a description and an analysis of the ad.
  5. You must always back assertions with specific evidence from the ads. This may come in the form of quotes, paraphrases, or descriptions.
  6. The paper must follow the APA format, specifically in the citations and references (pictures must be cited and be treated as quotes).
  7. You will be graded using the attached rubric. Print out a copy of this rubric and attach it to your final draft.
  8. It must be at least 3 full pages long, text only.
  9. You include a photo of the ad in your essay, preferably in color.
  10. Proofread your work before turning it in.

Recommended Structure of the Essay:

I. Introduction

· Catch reader interest

· State thesis (identify your ad and provide a general analytical statement about it)

II. Description of the Ad

· Who owns the ad, i.e., the company behind the product/service being advertised?

· Where was the ad published? Which newspaper, magazine, or website? Was it originally a billboard? If so, where was this billboard located?

· Who is the target audience of the ad?

· What is the main purpose of the ad

III. Analysis (Do not only describe, but, more importantly, discuss significance/underlying meaning)

· Use of type

· Use of space

· Use of color

· Use of visual images and graphics

IV. Conclusion

Note: You may of course deviate from this structure if you think it will result in a better essay.
