Study these examples of the adult-related themes in the film Shrek.

Societal rejection

Donkey: Can I stay with you? Please?

Shrek: Of course.

Donkey: Really?

Shrek: NO!

Donkey: Please. I don't wanna go back there. You don't know what it's like I to be considered a freak... Well, maybe you do, but I that's why we gotta stick together. You gotta let me stay!

Rudeness

Shrek: Donkey, two things okay? Shut... up!

Alcohol

Shrek: Can't we just settle this over a pint?

Verbal cruelty & Sarcasm

Lord Farquaad: [looking at Shrek] What's that? It's hideous.

Shrek: Well, it’s not very nice. [Looking at Donkey] It’s just a donkey.

Sarcastic humour

Donkey: Hi, princess.

Princess Fiona: It talks.

Shrek: Yeah, but it's getting him to shut up that's the trick.

Relationships

Donkey: [desperately talking to a dragon] I don't want to rush into a... physical relationship... I'm not that emotionally ready for a... er... commitment of this... er... magnitude!

Self-pity

Donkey: Hey, what's your problem, Shrek, what you got against the whole world anyway, huh?

Shrek: Look, I'm not the one with the problem, OK? It's the world that seems to have a problem with me! People take one look at me and go, "Ah! Help! Run! A big stupid ugly ogre!" They judge me before they even know me. That's why I'm better off alone.

Death

Donkey: Don't die, Shrek. And if you see any long tunnels, stay away from the light.

The Simpsons

The Simpsons (1989-present) is a satirical series that follows a very politically-incorrect animated family (The Simpsons). Homer Simpson, the father of the family, loves drinking beer and works in a nuclear power plant. Marge, his wife, is a homemaker. Their children are Bart (a troublemaker and underachiever), Lisa (an 8-year-old child prodigy) and a toddler, Maggie.

Read the dialogue and then answer these questions.

1. Where did Lisa learn that stealing was a sin?

2. Does Homer think stealing is a sin?

3. What is the Simpson family stealing “as we speak"?
