We all know that music, after all, is nothing more than a sequence of sound waves. But why do we fill our lives with music? What is it that allows a sequence of sound waves touch us so deeply?

In fact music is not only a combination of pleasant sounds. It’s the art that reflects life, it reflects ideas and emotions using no words. As Joseph Addison wrote “music is the greatest good that mortals know, and all of heaven we have below”.

Speaking about music in general we can single out music that remains up-market through centuries, classical music, like Bach, Tchaikovsky or Debussy; and the kind of music enjoyed by a broad public and which stands in contrast to classical music.

Certainly the appreciation and understanding of classical music comes in time and very much depends on the person’s education and intelligence, because such music needs patience, concentration and a peace of mind.

However young people nowadays are electrified and hypnotized by drive and energy of a new, modern music. Today there are countless number of different genres like rock, punk, hardcore, reggae, jazz, rap, pop and many others. I must admit that many representatives of modern music are down-market and tasteless. But there are many rather good as well.

What concerns me I can say that I don’t respond only to one definite style and my interests range from alternative to classics. I like music very much, it plays an important role in my life. Music arouses different feelings in me: it helps me to be in good mood, understand many things, music brings me pleasure and delight, it fills my life with joy and happiness, stirs up my imagination. Almost every time I take my walkman with me, so music accompanies me everywhere I go each day. Sometimes I think that the whole world and everything in it would worth nothing if there where no music. For music makes things brighter, better and fills them with some meaning. When I’m sad it helps me to overcome difficulties and reminds me that everything isn’t so bad, that every cloud has a silver lining. Music soothes me and gives me peace of mind.

As I said earlier I listen to different music. Sometimes I turn on such kind of music that many people might find violent and aggressive, not easy on the ear. But sometimes I need such music to let out my tension and nervousness.

At this point the English proverb goes: “There is no accounting for tastes”. Generally speaking the reaction on music is very subjective. In fact any music can be comprehended and interpreted in different ways. To my mind this is the most appealing feature of music. It’s highly democratic and free from any sort of dictatorship. That makes it the most universal common language of mankind nowadays and ever.
