We live in a fast paced, demanding world today. We all seem to be in a terrible hurry, under a lot of stress with less and less time to relax and take care of our health. But is there anything more important than health? I don’t think so. “Health is the greatest wealth”, wise people say. There are certain laws of health which deserve particular attention and they are so simple that even a child can learn them.
A standard daily routine is necessary to keep the body in perfect condition. We have a “body clock” that controls our body’s natural rhythms and keeps our body working in harmony. Ignoring or changing them can not only make us depressed, anxious and accident prone, but it can lead to much more serious health problems.
We were not designed to be members of a 24-hour society and we can’t ignore sleep. Sleeping well is an important part of good health. “Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise”, the proverb says.
The benefits of physical exercise are also obvious. First of all, keeping fit helps your body stay strong and healthy. Therefore you are less likely to get sick or suffer from stress-related health problems such as heart attacks and cancer. Furthermore, exercise is a good way to get rid of frustration and anger, because after the exercise the brain produces hormones called endorphins which make us feel cheerful. If you take time out of your busy schedule to exercise or have a walk or even dance regularly, it will be of benefit to both your physical and mental well-being.
We all know that eating healthy foods helps us to live longer and feel good. Our body needs proper balanced meals. The daily menu should include foods, which are nutritious, rich in vitamins. We all know that we should eat more fresh fruit, and vegetables, but when we are busy we tend to forget and go for something quick, convenient which is often quite unhealthy.
Unfortunately most young people today have very unhealthy eating habits. They don’t have regular meal times. They eat more junk food than ever before. But junk food doesn’t provide us with enough vitamins and minerals. The types of food that we eat influence our moods, have a drastic effect on how we feel. The high fibre foods can make us feel positive, energetic and think quicker while foods that contain a lot of artificial flavourings and preservatives can make us feel sad, anxious and prone to panic attacks.
To be healthy, people should get rid of their bad habits. Everyone should remember that cigarettes, alcohol and drugs destroy both body and brain.
I don’t think it’s hard to follow these recommendations. Every person should choose between healthy lifestyle and numerous illnesses.
Sport
Our health depends on our life.
Most people are busy working, pupils are busy studying, but they always find time to relax and enjoy themselves. Usually we spend our spare time in many different ways. Everyone has his own way of relaxing. But the most popular way is to participate in sports.
Sport helps people to maintain good health and enjoy life, to stay in good shape, keep them fit and makes them more organized and better disciplined in their daily life.
Physical culture and sports in our country are part of our cultural and public life. It is very popular with young people, they are particularly keen on soccer, volleyball, track-and-field in summer, skiing and ice-hockey in winter, among some of them weight-lifting, boxing, every kind of shooting are favourite.
Sport is also paid great attention to in schools, colleges, and universities. You can hardly find a school without a gym or a sports ground. Every city and town has a few stadiums, swimming pools, amateur clubs and keep fit centres where people go in for aerobics, yoga, body-building, swimming, skating, jogging.
Not everyone who enjoys sporting events like to participate in them. Thousands of people prefer to be spectators attending the games and supporting their favourite team at the stadiums or watch the competitions on TV.
From time to time competitions in volleyball and basketball are held at our school, but some boys and girls don't want to take an active part in them. They don't believe that sport is very necessary. They think that sport may stand in the way of other important things. They are of course, wrong, because team games develop character and mind and quick thinking. And English proverb says, "In sports and journeys men are known."
Everyone knows that getting fit is good for you – but why is it good and what are the ways to be fit?
Getting in shape has never been more popular. For millions of people around the world, regular exercise is now part of their daily lives. Some jog, cycle and swim, while others prefer to work-out (exercise) in gyms, do aerobics or play team sports. They are part of the worldwide fitness revolution, which has taken place over the last 20 years. And there are several reasons for it. Fit people live longer, than unfit people, especially those who smoke and drink. People now accept that taking regular exercise is a great way to become and stay healthy.
Another reason for the fitness boom is youth and beauty. Men and women try their best to look as young and attractive as possible. And fit people not only feel good they look good too.
More sport appears on our TV screens today than ever before. Work-out videos have made it possible and easier to exercise at home. Dozens of new magazines devoted to sport, health and fitness have been published in recent years. Not all kinds of exercise have the same effect on the body. For example, weight-lifting improve your strength, yoga and dance improve your suppleness, then of course there are aerobic activities (jogging, swimming, cycling, football and to improve your heart and lung capacity you need to do an aerobic activity three times a week) that improve your stamina.
And of course a lot of changes happen inside your body; heart-beat goes up; your breath are deeper and three times more often than usual, extra blood is sent to your muscles, you lose water due to sweating. You feel good, because your body releases chemicals (called endorphins).
So you can see the advantages of being fit. Fitness:
— reduces the risk of heart attacks;
— increases strength, stamina, suppleness;
— means that you sleep better and don't get tired so easily;
— helps you to loose weight;
— make you feel healthier, happier and more positive.
