Education in Great Britain
Education in Great Britain has three levels: primary, secondary and higher education. There is also pre-school education: nursery school and kindergarten.
From five till sixteen education is compulsory. There are different types of schools in Great Britain: state and private.State schoo ls can be comprehensive, grammar, modern and technical.Private (or independent) schools can be pre-preparatory, preparatory and public. There are also single-sex schools (only for boys or girls) and co-educational schools (where girls and boys study together).
At the age of five children go to primary school. Primary school is divided into infant school (from five till seven) and junior (from seven till eleven). Then children go to secondary school. At the age of sixteen children take General Certificate of Secondary Education examination – Ordinary Level.
If they want to enter a university, they must take Advanced Level exam in three subjects at the age of eighteen. Studies at university last three-four years and students get a Bachelor’s degree. To get Master’s and Doctor’s degree students have to study two or more years. After graduating from college or university students get a degree certificate.
There are 120 universities in Great Britain. The oldest and the most famous universities in Great Britain are Oxford and Cambridge Universities.
Education in the USA
Education in the USA has three levels: elementary, secondary and higher education. There is also pre-school education: nursery school (or pre-school) and kindergarten.
There are state public schools and private schools.
There are twelve grades in American school education. From six till eleven children go to elementary school (1-6 grades). From eleven till fourteen they go to junior high school (7-8 grades). And from fourteen till sixteen or eighteen American children go high school (9-12 grades). There are two types of high school: the first with more academic curriculum and prepare pupils for entering a college or university. And the second offers vocational education.
Schools in the USA are divided into comprehensive, general, vocational and specialized. Extra-curricular activity is also very important in the American school system.
To enter a college or university American students must take Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) or American College Testing (ACT), also they must have a high school diploma, good recommendations from high school teachers and make a good impression at the interview.
There are about 3000 colleges and universities in the USA. The oldest and most famous is Harvard University. A lot of outstanding people graduated from Harvard University.
