INTRODUCTION

Self-esteem among girls aged 14-15 decreased by 8 percent over the past 7 years. Largely this affects communication in social networks, which every year is getting larger in scale and more popular. Being a person belonging to adolescent group and actively using social networks, I was interested in the topic of social media influence on self-esteem and personal perception of teenager.

Although all generations have access to social networks, only teens use it with fanaticism. Abusing, obsession of virtual communication and comparing yourself to others can destroy the psyche and self-esteem. Children and teenagers most strongly subjected to this influence because they have unstable psyche and unformed character. Besides, the constant pastime in the network may make you fat, anxious and depressive, and it’s certainly won’t raise your self-esteem.

On the other hand placing personal information on the profile, publishing successful photos, positive comments to the photos and increasing the number of followers can promote growth of self-esteem. For people who have talents or/and beauty social media are an excellent platform for self-realization because there is an opportunity to show yourself a huge number of people. It is generally agreed today that social networks affect a person, but in different ways for each other.

This research will find out how much do social networks affect on self-esteem of adolescents, compare the difference between negative and positive impact, and is it possible to reduce the negative impact of social media.

Context

Social networking began in 1978 with the Bulletin Board System (BBS). The BBS was hosted on computers and help users exchange information over phone lines with other users. Geocities was one of the first social networking sites on the internet, which have started, operate in 1994. The early 2000s brought some huge developments in social networking and social media. They truly have become popular since creation of Facebook in 2004, which is the biggest social network in the world with over 1 billion active users by the end of 2012. Now every social network has its own characteristics: easy communication with friends by correspondence (VK, Facebook), communication through video and photo (Snapchat, Skype), photo sharing and viewing (Instagram), quick thinking (Twitter), blogs (Tumblr) etc.

Self-assessment it is how high or low the person himself assesses his personal qualities and capabilities (Н.И. Козлов). Self-esteem can be adequate (high, medium, low) and inadequate (understated or overestimated); floating or stable. Our self-esteem evolves throughout our lives as we develop an image of ourselves through our experiences with different people and activities. Experiences during childhood play a particularly large role in the shaping of self-esteem but fortunately, it has the ability to change.

AIMS

Social networks are the best place for connecting with friends and make new acquaintances. But if people use it unreasonable it will carry many unpleasant consequences like decreasing of self esteem. However only few people realize what kind of problems bring with them social networks. My purpose is to find out how social media influence on teens answering the following questions:

1. What are the positive and negative aspects of using social networks for self-assessment?

2. How do they make lower/higher self-esteem?

3. Is it possible to oppose the negative influence?

- By taking statistical an informational data, results of survey and answers to the interview which will help to compare data from the Internet with the data received me to more accurately assess the situation with teenage self-esteem.

METHOD

I used the primary and secondary methods to receiving the necessary data. The online survey, which is the primary method, has been conducted among teenagers, predominantly from Almaty in age 15-17. The survey done by “SurveyMonkey.com”. The survey includes questions about the conduction time on the internet and about the level of respondents’ self-esteem. With the help of the responses can be estimated dependence between the level of self-esteem and using social networks. Reliable sources is secondary method. With it I get information about other studies on this topic.
