a company that undertakes to provide
the equipment and manpower needed to
drill a well on behalf of an operator
Drilling mud
a mixture of clays, water and chemicals
pumped down the drill string and up the
annulus during drilling in order to lubricate
the system, carry away rock cuttings,
maintain the required pressure at
the evaluation, etc
Drilling table
the table on the derrick floor whereby
the drill pipe is rotated, also called the
rotary table
Rotary hose
the flexible hose that transfers the drilling
mud from the stand pipe to the top of the
drill string via a swivel coupling
Mud pumps
pumps used to circulate drilling mud at
the desired pressure and flow rate, also
called slush pumps
Butadiene
an unsaturated derivative of butane, one
of the most important raw materials used
in the manufacture of synthetic rubber
Butane
the saturated hydrocarbon (alkane) with
four carbon atoms in its molecule
(C4H10), the fourth member of the paraffin
series, a gas at atmospheric pressure
and normal temperature, but easily liquefied
by pressure for transportation and
subsequent use
Doghouse
a small shelter located on the rig floor for
use by the drilling crew
Town gas
the traditional type of locally manufactured
gas fuel, originally made from coal
Vacuum
a system is under vacuum when its pressure
is below that of the surrounding
atmosphere The lower the pressure, the
higher the vacuum
Carried interest
when a company pays for all or part of a
partner's costs during exploration or
development, e g when a company
"carries" a state that retains a participation
interest in a field
Updip
the opposite of downdip
Kelly
a square or hexagonal hollow shaft which
engages at one end with the drilling table
and at the other with the drill pipe
Probable reserves
undeveloped oil and/or gas reserves
considered to be recoverable from penetrated
formations but lacking information
to be classified as proven reserves
Heave
the up-and-down movement of a
semisubmersible drilling platform or drill ship
Swivel
the rotating coupling which connects the
rotary hose to the drill string
Heliport
a land base from which helicopters
operate
Helipad
the platform on an offshore installation on
which helicopters land
Derrick man
the member of the drilling crew who
works up the derrick, also known as the
derrick monkey
Explosion
a violent, uncontrolled release of pressure
causing noise and possibly accompanied
by fire and evolution of gases
Sampling
the process of obtaining a small quantity
of material which is as representative as
possible of the total volume
Shale shaker
a vibrating or rotating screen which
removes the coarse drill cuttings from the
drilling mud prior to its recirculation
