Efficient organizations depend on the close co-operation of all the departments.
Personnel/Human Resources is responsible for recruitment and selection. This involves HR planning, designing systems for hiring, appraising the performance of employees, also organizing training courses to make sure the staff have the skills to do their work efficiently. In a large company a personnel department will probably be divided into sections covering the main areas of work. HR is in charge of staff welfare (health and safety).This involves areas such as the sports and social club, canteen and, of course, meeting government requirements concerning employment practices.

Finance/Accounts is primarily responsible for the organization's financial resources and keeping a record of all payments made and received.It is responsible for all receipts and payments, wages, salaries and petty cash; monitoring the costs of running the business and analyzing the costs of production. It also deals with the banks when the company needs to raise money and coordinates budgets for different departments – their estimate of what they need to spend during a year.
Production ( product /operations) creates and manages the systems that convert resources into goods and services.This function only exists in a manufacturing business. It has overall responsibility for the factory, keeps the company’s production facilities running efficiently, organizes quality control to maintain product standardsand ensures that the right goods are available at the right time. This involves planning methods of production (including purchasing and replacing equipment); liaising with purchasing to ensure that the raw materials are available and with personnel to ensure that sufficient trained staff is available and working conditions are appropriate.
Purchasing orders all supplies needed by the firm.It is responsible for buying all materials, components and equipment and for their storage. The head (chief) buyer has to purchase goods of the right quality and the right quantity and to ensure they are available when required by the other departments. This also involves finding suppliers and negotiating prices and delivery times.
Marketing/Sales and Marketing carries out market research, organizes the activities of the sales representatives and brings the firm’s goods and services to the attention of potential customers.It is responsible for the exchange of products between the organization and its customers or clients. Specific areas within marketing are marketing research, advertising, promotion, sales, and distribution. They also set prices.
Distribution/Sales and Distribution deals with sellingthe finished products to customers. As well as negotiating contracts, it’s in charge of getting the products to the customers in the fastest, cheapest and most efficient way. They work with a large team of national reps whose job is to get orders from customers and then ensure that the orders are delivered.
Research and Development/R&D works to improve the firm’s product range creates new products and test them.
Informational Technology/IT is responsible for creating and maintaining systems to support company’s business objectives. To achieve this goal, the department deploys solutions featuring computer hardware, back office systems, application software, and communications networks.
This department deals with the day-to-day running of the company’s computer systems, insures that all the hardware and software is operational and solves problems when they go wrong. It also designs information systems for the different departments.
Legal d raws up contracts, advises on corporate regulations.
Public Relations/PR i s responsible for relations between the company and the public. It provides the latest information and news of company’s activity and makes it popular. It also manages the corporate website and on-line product catalogue.
Transport operates the firm’s lorries, vans and cars, and also arranges delivery of goods to customers.
Secretarial/Administration runs the mail room for all incoming and outgoing correspondence, also includes data processing services, such as typing and photocopying and organizing office furniture.
This is controlled by the company secretary who is usually qualified in law and/or accounts. He or she has certain legal duties including holding the register of shareholders, minute books of company meetings and the books of account.
Administrationis not associated with any specific functional area but provides overall administrative leadership. It does not specialize in operations, finance, marketing, or human resources management but instead coordinates the activities of specialized managers in all these areas.
