The British and American Novel in the Context of Time
Course description
The course involves you in intensive study and analysis of a literary work (a novel) with emphasis on your active response through discussion and debates.
The purpose of the course is to help you appreciate novels, understand details of the plot, think about the characters, about what the writer is trying to say and how s/he says it.

The Novel in the Context of Time (e-version), Academic Writing
The classes follow the same basic structure, outlined below.
Background
Background activities involve examining the authors’ biographies and their contribution to the fictional world as well as relevant historical, social, economic, literary and cultural context). It is a good idea to use the Internet or library resources to find information about one of the subjects and then prepare a presentation of the findings to the class.
Talking Points
The Talking Points are related to the story’s plot, conversations, characters, thoughts, feelings and observations. You are expected to make notes – answer questions, complete schemes, draw mind maps and keep a record of new vocabulary in your Reader’s Diary. This info will come in handy in the classroom.
Film Viewing
This is an extra activity which is planned to be done after the two classes of Talking Points. The films are accompanied by comprehension questions, topics for discussions, useful vocabulary.
Feedback
The feedback items allow you to draw together both ideas and vocabulary from the text and classroom activities and use them to construct your own presentation.
