Food For Thought

Have you ever thought about what you are interested in? No, I mean, seriously. Most of us would answer football, sport, music, reading or something else, without really thinking carefully about the answer.

Food- that’s the answer!

Man has lived on the earth for thousands of years. At first he moved from place to place without settling down in a permanent home. Why? He was looking for food. At first he ate berries and nuts and perhaps small animals which he was able to catch and kill. He even learned to fish.

Then something happened which changed his whole way of living. He learned how to get food without moving from one place to another. He discovered how to raise plants and animals for food. From many plants he took the seeds: rye, oats, rice, and wheat. Finally, he learnt to make bread.

We still eat leaves of such plants as cabbage, lettuce and spinach. We eat roots of potatoes, radish and carrots. We eat the seeds of beans, peanuts and peas. We eat flowers of cauliflower and broccoli.

Moreover, man raises many kinds of animals for food: cows for beef, pigs for pork, sheep for mutton and lamb, as well as many different birds.

Butter and cheese are made from milk. We call such food organic or natural. It means that pesticides or additives are not used in the production process.

Eating out is on the increase. With the Internet, going out for a meal is a lot easier. You can make a reservation and look at the menu, choosing a starter, main course and dessert, before you go.

Eating in is still popular and many people have started cooking as a hobby. But eating in doesn’t always mean cooking. Shops offer a bigger variety of ready-made and pre-packed meals, more restaurants offer take-away meals made according to different recipes.

The world’s population is growing fast but our planet is not. Supplies of food have reached very low levels. Take fish or seafood, for example. The number of it in the world ocean has decreased greatly because of overfishing and water pollution.

To feed the growing population, farmers have to grow different types of crops and to grow more and more genetically modified crops. Scientists manipulate the DNA structure of plants and animals to produce more food or improve resistance to diseases. But what are the long-term effects? Many people are not happy about these new developments. However, we hope to see more “health foods” or nutraceuticals in the future.
