Cities. Main Attractions.
I.What places in the USA do you know? Have you ever heard about the Statue of Liberty,Broadway, White House, the Carnegie Hall? Where are these attractions?
II. Read the words and check their meaning in the glossary.
Borough, skyscraper, subway, suburb, harbour.
III. Read the text and find out about main attractions of some cities.
1. New York is the biggest city in the USA and its cultural capital. The population of the city is nearly eight million. There are five “ boroughs” in New York: Brooklyn, the Bronx, Manhattan, Queens and Richmond. Manhattan, the smallest island, is the real centre of the city. When people say “New York City“ they usually mean Manhattan with its interesting shops, museums and, of course, sky-scrapers. Among the streets is Broadway where you can find New York` best known opera house, the Metropolitan. International stars sing there from September until April. The Carnegie Hall is the city` most popular concert hall.
2. San Francisco lies on a small land with the Pacific Ocean on one side and a huge harbour on the other. The famous Golden Gate Bridge crosses over the habour. San Francisco` popula - tion is only 716,000, but it is the biggest busi- ness centre in Califonia in the west of the USA. It is also America`s most international city. The city is known as “Paris of the West “,”Baghdad by the Bay” and “Gateway to the Orient”. The winds are healthy and they make people hungry. More than 2,600 restaurants serve food from all round the world.
3. Washington is the capital of the USA. It is wonderful for tourists, because there are a lot of famous and historical places to see. The best known building is the White House, home of American Presidents. The President works in the “ Oval Office”, but the White House is also a family home. The next attraction is the Capitol. The members of Congress meet here to discuss the nation’s business. It is easy to get lost in this huge building, full of paintings and statues. From the Capitol there is a magnificent view down the Lincoln Memorial. There are also some important museums. You can see all kinds of things, the dresses of Presedents’ wives, the original Declaraton of Independence, the largest blue diamond of the world and others.
IV. Discuss in groups what you can say about the places. Use the words:

V. Watch the video and name other attractions in Washington.
VI. Watch the film again and comment on what you see.(The film is shown without a sound).
