World Exhibition

The first world industrial exhibition was held in London in 1851. It was a great success. It displayed exhibits of 40 participat­ing nations and the number of visitors reached over six million.

Since then world industrial exhibitions have had a colourful history. Many such events have been held, some of them on a large scale. They have changed not only in size and scale, but also in character and overall purpose. Such events provided opportunities for exchanging scientific, technological and cultural achievements of the people of Europe, America, Australia, Asia and Africa.

Beginning with the early 60s, international expositions began to take new forms, trying to emphasize not only technological progress, but also other aspects of life. They became festivalsof industry and culture.

The first international exhibition in our country was held in Moscow in 1964. Since then exhibitions have been held in other cities as well and their number has increased to a great extent.

Fairs and exhibitions provide an opportunity to establish profi­table contacts and promote mutual understanding among different nations.

At the International Exposition

An exposition is being held in Vancouver British Columbia. Here is what Ms. Baker, a hostess of the Canadian Pavilion, said about her activities:

«I am a hostess of the Canadian Pavilion and basically my job is to greet presidents of the companies and important businessmen. I usually tour the pavilion, explain to them all about the displays, show movies and then make sure that they are comfortable and well-served and show them on their way. Our pavilion is very popular with the VIP's (very important persons) and we often bring them here.

When I visited your pavilion I was really impressed. I've never been to your country as yet. Your displays are very well done and it was the first time I met Russian people and spoke with them. Truly meeting you and visiting your pavilion has helped to cross the bar­rier, that unfortunate wall, which was built up. You realize that we are all human beings, all with the same feelings and desires. It was an eye-opener for me».

Belagro 96

This was the name of the event scheduled to start open on 11 June at the exhibition site Minskexpo. This is the sixth interna­tional agricultural exhibition in a row with more than 100 partici­pants. A great part of the exhibits will be presented by companies and firms from Belarus, as Belarus has traditionally been regarded as an agrarian country. The variety will be great. Customers will be able to see the agricultural machinery, mini-ovens, small milk, meat and poultry processing lines, packaging and refrigerating equipment and testing kits for the chemical and biological analyses of foods, fodder, soil, and water. It would take volumes to enumer­ate all. Other events will include seminars and a symposium for specialists in the meat processing and packaging equipment.

The organizers of the exhibition Belargo-96, the Exhibition Company Chamber of Commerce and Trade, Ministry of Industry and the German firm Traced GmbH. hope that this new international event will be visited by many and be met with genuine inter­est by agricultural specialists and business people.

A Successful Chinese Trade Fair

Several exhibitions of Chinese merchandise, organized by groups of firms or separate regions, have been held lately in Mos­cow and Moscow region.

One of the latest undertakings was the trade fair of goods from China's most populous province that of Sichuan, held in early Sep­tember in Khimki, near Moscow. The exhibition was attended by representatives from nearly 50 large-scale and private firms. Visi­tors to the exhibition could buy traditional products for Chinese export - tea, knitted and woolen garments, down jackets, leather bags, jogging shoes, vacuum flasks, carpets.

Talks were held on the establishing of joint ventures in the tan­ning and textile industries.

Next year, a delegation from the Moscow Region is expected to pay a return visit to the PRC with its own fair, establishing com­modities from the region.
